I gave up smoking 10 weeks ago after COPD diagnosis and yes I also feel more breathless at times. Have you checked out whether you have an infection as I have had 4 in the past few months. I guess I am probably exhausted. It won't always be this bad. Join a PR group, it will make a huge difference to your confidence. Sincere good luck , it can be very frightening at times. Best wishes AD

Heard lots of people mention on this site that their breathing gets worse when stopping smoking, but eventually gets better - hang on in there

Hi Sesh, Lovemelovemydogs is quite right, it gets worse before it gets better, I think that is why so many people give up giving up! Anything that is life-changing is difficult, keep at it, come on here for a moan and some support, you will always find it here!

It will get easier it is your lungs getting rid of the toxins Please don't start smoking again You can get through this and will feel so much better. your tast will return as will your sense of smell. I did not realise how much difference it would make until I stopped.

Good luck we are all supporting you.

Best wishes

Jo :-)

As everyone says it does get easier, to help the detox along consider drinking plenty of water, peeling and eating oranges, exercise with every craving, even just walking up and down inside or if the weather permits outside. If you don't exercise regularly your breathing will become much worse whenever you attempt exertion, so just start slowly as much as you can and keep repeating that each day, several times a day between resting if you are only managing a few minutes at a time. The other thing to consider if your breathing is worse is a chest infection, if you have a cold or have flu you will need to make a telephone appointment with the doc to get further advice and prescription. the coughing up is normal with stopping smoking, your lungs are attempting to rid themselves of tar residue that may be laying on the lungs.

Keep up the good work, you will look back and find things will have improved over time.

All good wishes Zoee x

I stopped a year ago yesterday and yes, it does get better. Part of it is your brain saying "go on, have one" don't give in to it. Nicotine is a very powerful addiction both physical and menta.

Hope you stick to your resolve and well done so far. I felt worse when I stopped but when the breathlessness comes on you will be able to say I'm not aggragavating the condition because of continuing to smoke. You'll make it but it is hard to stop

Please hang on in there. Well done for quitting, really, bloody well done. However, one does need to understand that unfortunately any damage your smoking caused through your life will always be there. You stopping has put a stop to any disease, but the legacy will linger on.

You can make it better, by looking after yourself, by exercising, with breathing exercises. Start small, and start getting those lungs better. Its up to you now to make those lungs act better than they are. You have stopped the down-slide, and can raise your life expectancy and life enjoyment massively,

For each time I have given up I have felt worse, but my GP said it was basically the body getting rid of all the gunk from the lungs from smoking. Hang in there and you will feel better xxxxx
