Has anyone had a TIA.?

I had one on news years day after a family get together. Spent a night on the stroke unit and sent home with a variety of pills and had a follow up visit from the stroke nurse yesterday.

Life style changes required but nothing drastic and i have wonderful family but i cant understand why i feel so so tearful and fed up.when really i should be positive about the outcome and that it could have worse.I have Moderate copd and have given up smoking recently......can anyone from personal experience let me know if this feeling is normal after TIA?

My uncle recently had one on a trip to the USA. He's now really quite depressed. My nana was the same after her stroke. Maybe you should see about anti-depressants. It does seen to be quite common emotional reaction to them.

Hi allyj, although I don't have personal experience of TIA, something similar happened to me medically a few years ago. It must have been frightening for you when this happened and you probably have a degree of post traumatic shock after being faced with something that could have turned out to be a full blown stroke, as you weren't to know that at the time. I think when something like this happens to you, what your future life could be like is staring you in the face and it's very scary. On minute you're living a "normal" life and the next minute everything seems to have changed and your future is uncertain. Luckily, it wasn't as bad as you first feared and you will make a full recovery and gradually come to terms with what's happened. Well done for quitting the cigs, keep the good work up! Don't hesitate to see your doctor if you continue to feel down. Libby x

Hi Allyj

I've had a few episodes that could have been tia's. The last one was last february when I lost the power in my right arm and was kept in over night. As I said I have had a few little turns and never been definitely diagnosed, my gp said " oh I see you had a tia" I said well you know more than me. They just don't seem able to make up their minds. I was supposed to have a mri scan but am claustrophobic. Now I have been diagnosed with atrial fibrillation so I am beginning to think I pprobably have had tia's. But it is scary and I can understand you being tearful. So don't beat yourself up with it. Good luck! M

Hi AllyJ, my wife had a TIA late last year, same symptoms, tearful, fed up, etc. and from what i can gather speaking to the specialist, this is all quite normal. Life style changes, reduced workload and stress levels at her works and she's doing really well now. Still gets nervous if arms/legs/ anything tingles but that's natural. It's times like this that we realise we are not invincible like we thought we were and it's an emotional rollercoaster coming to terms with that. I hope you make a full recovery like my wife has done

Hi

Yes I've had 2 TIA's myself plus a full stroke after.

From my experience I felt very tearful, confused, forgetful and more tearful after my TIA's but it certainly wasn't depression.

You certainly know when you have a TIA and I've spoken to many others who've had one and they were/are tearful too.

The best advice I can give here is just go with your emotions, if you need to cry, cry! It's good for you!

Please do not hesitate to contact me directly if you want to chat or need any further advice, I'll be happy to listen/help if I can :)

Best wishes
