We probably need to have a bit more information mccotter. Like what stage, your FEV 1 reading, what your GP said.

Hello though and welcome to the site.

hi lynne

many thanks for your reply, i have to get assessed on jan 4th. i have had a bad stomach and chest for the past 2 months so dr sent me for an xray, told me i had copd. i have since stopped smoking dr ruled out everything else so said i had copd.(or so i believe) will know more on jan 4th. needed to give up the fags anyway, this has given me the push to do it now.

will let you know how it goes.

thanks again,

mccotter

COPD can go from no symptoms to gasping for each breath. Your own case will depend on what stage you have reached and how you manage it from here. Keeping up with your medication, taking regular exercise, eating properly can all help to slow down the progress. Don't believe all you read.Auntymary xx

Hi mccotter.

If you smoke then give it up. That's the first part.

Hi mccotter, sorry to hear of your diagnosis. I agree with what the others have said, you need to find out more information about the severity of your condition, COPD covers emphysema, asthma and bronchitis, is it emphysema you have? If you have only just been diagnosed, then needing carers is probably a long way down the road. I was diagnosed 15 years ago and stupidly carried on smoking. I only gave up 3 years ago and it did improve my life a little (it was dire at that stage). But it's evident it's slowly getting worse again. If you are early stage (or any stage, really) and still smoking it's imperative that you pack those cigs in asap and maybe you will not worsen too much. Believe me, this is not an illness you would wish on your worst enemy so the more you can help the situation now, the better. Sorry if this sounds brutal, but I am end stage, housebound, having only been out twice this year and not at all since June. Best wishes. Libby

Hi latingirlshyp - well I am classed as end stage, but this can last years. I don't use oxygen as I have been told it can't benefit me as I already retain far too much. My emphsema affects me differently day by day. Sometimes I'm not too bad, other times it's really bad. But at my best I can't walk up a flight of stairs without extreme breathlessness. It affects us all in different degrees of severity. Someone else with the same lung capacity as me (under 25%) may cope better than me, or worse. I was diagnosed over 15 years ago and if I had given up smoking there and then I would not have deteriorated to anything like my condition now. I gave up only 3 years ago which I was in a desperate situation with my copd, and it did improve my quality of life quite a bit, but am now slowly deteriorating again. The best advice I can give is to give if smoking immediately(if you still are) and you will find the deterioration much slower and your quality of life will last for many more years. Hope this helps! Hi mccotter. I agree with the others. Much depends on the stage you are at. You have already done the most important thing and thats to give up smoking. Well done. No matter what stage you are, keeping as fit as possible and eating healthly should slow down the progression of the disease or it might not worsen at all. Just depends on your circumstances. But people can live for many years with lung problems and some have a normal life span. I know its terrifying to be diagnosed with COPD but try not to worry to much. There is light at the end of the tunnel
