I presume you will be on sick leave for which you will need a 'fit note' as they are now called. It is your responsablilty to get a 'fit note' in order to claim benifit once a month is normal.

If you fail to meet the deadline you will lose benifit.

If you ring the BLF helpline they will advice you further. 03000 030 555.

Please keep a Diary. Get everything from the Company in writing, usualy they will provide a written statement of the meeting and give you a copy. If you agree that what was said is faithfully recorded then you can sign it. Keep everything together, you may not need it but it is as well to do this from the start. Memory will not do should there be a need for any legal action in the future. I do hope it will not come to this but better safe than sorry. Find your Contract and any other related paperwork. Try not to stress, treat it like a project. As Stone says, ring BLF they have a dedicated Benefit team. Fingers crossed, Jane.

Hi

I would agree with hajoed - get everything in writing so there is no confusion later. Are your employers paying you sick pay or is it SSP?

Statement of Fitness to Work or Fit Note has replaced sick notes and your GP needs to write if you are fit or not fit to work. For benefits it is really imporatnt you do get the notes in on time. The link below has more specific information on Fit Notes:

Please call us on 03000 030 555.

Hi Baxter, there should be no problem with the length of the Fit Note from your GP. Before I finished work I had one for 3 months and then one for 6 months.

I was dealing with HR but I was not claiming benefits then. My GP gave me the Fit Notes and I put them in and the company paid my sick leave until I finally left. He then gave me a 6 month note for claiming benefits.

hi, make sure you photo copy your `fit notes` before you send them off they do lose them sometimes and although i`d sent in everyone they asked for they requested the whole lot again luckily my friend had told me to photo copy them good luck

In agreement with everyone, just one more point if you belong to a Union, inform them they will have a team that could help in these matters.
