There have been several discussions about Vitamin D, specifically D3, and how some people are deficient in what's called 'the sunshine vitamin'. It used to be that people with TB in a sanatorium would be taken outdoors, in their beds, to absorb the suns rays to assist their recovery. Most people take in enough Vitamin D for their needs from natural sunlight as well as a healthy diet. Dairy products in particular provide Vitamin D.

Here's on discsussion on the topic:

I've been seen by my chest consultant and now a specialist, read about it here:

As you will read in those blogs, I've been tested at the hospital and they agree I'm deficient, so I'm taking a D3 supplement I buy myself. They are going to monitor me regularly

It is not good for everyone, so please be careful before taking anything like this.

I have to take 5mg steroid pill every day and also vitamin D3 pill.apparently the steroids weaken your bone density and the vitamin D3 helps to combat it.

I was on the Adcal D3 for years for being on Prednisolone and last year they did a D test and I was rediculously low. Obviously my body wasn't storing it ot he Adcal wasn't doing the job.

Had to have very high doses of Vitamin D3 shoved in me and now like Gordon buy my own in a spray under the tongue.

My latest test is now normal

Research has showed that low levels of vitamin D and COPD goes hand in hand. A bit like the chicken and the egg though. If low levels of vitamin D caused by having COPD. Or is COPD a result of having low levels of vitamin D. The problem is that low vitamin D levels leaves your immune system weak, and in many cases unable to fight off even simple cold let alone the more serious ones. Research has recently also showed that if you have normal levels, you will not suffer exacerbations as much. I take a capsule of D3 every day. While this does not cure COPD, nothing will do that, it ensures my immune system at least has a fighting start. Do not take vitamin D3 with calcium, or if you have sarcoidosis.

My GP also prescribed 1000 units of Vitamin D. I have read, a reliable source, that a great many of the UK population are deficient in the vitamin

Low level of vitamin D 'helps you live longer'

A SURPRISING link has been found between long life and naturally low vitamin D levels.

Scientists made the discovery after studying data on 380 families with members who survived into their 90s.

Previous research has shown people lacking the "sunshine vitamin" are more at risk to a host of conditions, including heart disease, diabetes, cancer, allergies and mental illness.

According to these studies, having too little vitamin D increases the chances of premature death.

In the new investigation, Dutch scientists examined data from the Leiden Longevity Study, which involved families with at least two very elderly siblings -- either a brother aged at least 89, or a sister aged 91 and over.

A total of 1,038 offspring of the elderly siblings were also included with their partners.

Vitamin D is created in the skin by sunlight, and also obtained from food or supplements, but genetic factors also influence blood levels in different individuals.

The scientists looked at the influence of genetic code alterations known as single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in three genes associated with vitamin D levels.

Their findings were reported in the Canadian Medical Association Journal.

The authors, led by Dr Diana van Heemst, from Leiden University Medical Centre, wrote: "We found that the offspring of nonagenarians who had at least one nonagenarian sibling had lower levels of vitamin D than controls, independent of possible confounding factors and SNPs associated with vitamin D levels.".

Vitamin D is known to be vital for healthy bones and teeth. But the new results throw doubt on the idea that low levels of the vitamin in the blood can lead to a wide array of health problems, according to the researchers.

The new research suggested naturally low levels of vitamin D may go hand-in-hand with a genetic resistance to ageing.

Pete has to be very careful with vitamin D as it does not do well with sarcoidosis. Our daughter in law has lupus and should not sunbathe either but she does. Just need to take care and know what you are up against. It is different for everyone.xx
