Hi all,

I have had inhalers for "asthma" now confirmed "COPD" . This is the first time I have ever had thrush in my throat. I always drink fluid after using my inhalers and use a spacer. Does anyone else have these problems

Hi Stitch

Same here. I have had inhalers for 20 years and never had it before until now. I'd been telling my doc my throat was closing up and he kept telling me it was not my throat but my lungs. Finally, change of doctor, this one looked in my throat and said " my god, its white with infection" Got some antibiotics for that too now. I cant understand why I have suddenly got it after all these years and really want to avoid a repeat.

Hiya,

I work in a pharmacy and it is quite common. It is important to always rinse your mouth, a good tip is to brush your teeth afterwards or even gargle with salt water.

The stronger the dose of inhaler and the more frequent you use them the more likelihood of haveing oral thrush. Using steroids over a long period as you know, lowers the immune system and hence the thrush.

You could also ask your GP for a prescription for a spacer device to use with your inhalers. This helps as you can wash your spacer, hnce reducing the risk of germs.

Hope this helps.

Hi cantgetmybreath, I too have had asthma for yrs and have only had thrush on a few rare occasions, however, today's inhalers seem to be stronger and my asthma nurse has told me to gargle and spit and rinse and spit out after every use of my inhaler. I didn't think it would make a difference and drinking water after use has always worked before. However, I followed her advice and I have to tell you it makes a difference. So get up and gargle. Good luck Maximonkey
