Hi, This is a strange one and has even stumped the professionals. Since July of last year (2023) I start with a blocked nose which quickly becomes mucus in the back of my throat. I have tried Neti Pot, Steroid nasel sprays and very strong prescribed anti histamines. No use! This is the weird bit. I wake up each morning fine and clear, by midday it starts in my nose and then quickly the mucus is at the back of my throat. 6 hours later it starts to disappear. Everyday it's the same start and finish times, even to the point of it starting 1 hour later when the UK clocks go forward at spring and back an hour when the clocks return to winter time. This has happened everyday for the past 10 months. Always the same time give or take 15 minutes. The Dr's I have spoken to have never heard of this and I am not sure if they believe me. (I can't blame them). My family think it's hysterical as they can tell the time by me clearing my throat of mucus.
Has anyone heard of something similar?

I don't know what it is, but I have had something like that, Blocked Nose and gunk in throat, when become unblocked, that does not stop the runny gunk, have not a clue what it is, had it for ages,
Maybe it's the time it starts to drain out from settling in a position overnight? Or am allergy to something that happens at a certain time of day? I'm only guessing as I'm not medically trained.
Have you tried doing nasal rinses, or using the Neilmed Nasamist am and pm? I found this really helped the amount of gunk my sinuses produced. 😊
Sounds baffling, as well as a total nuisance, At least no-one here will think you're hysterical. Is somebody or some establishment quietly releasing some toxic fumes near you? Best wishes in getting to the bottom of the mystery.
when I had to monitor and record my peak flow numbers three times a day , I noticed a definite pattern …..peak flow highest mid day , lower other times
How odd, I have something similar, but not with such precision in timing and not so productive. Mine is related to a few things, including the dryness in the house and how tired I am. Hope you do manage to discover the cause of it.
I’m fascinated by things like this and think it must be brain related as there’s so much we don’t yet know about its workings. I can wake up at exactly the same time in the night for weeks on end then it changes. I then go through exactly the same patterns of getting back to sleep. The cyclical nature of your mucus and clearing does sound like your body clock. Let us all know if you get an answer!
I will, I have become quite fascinated myself as I find it strange. I really want to get to the bottom of it. If it wasn't for the discomfort I quite enjoy researching why it's happening to me. So far I haven't been able to pinpoint the reasons but I will keep trying.
Yes.....very similar. Six weeks after being diagnosed with Bronchiectasis, I would get up in a morning and within 1/2 hour I would start sounding nasally (nose wasn't blocked), this progressed to pressure in my head, face & nose, aching teeth, whoozie, a couple of stints of vertigo, sore throat & the feeling of 2 ulcers on my tongue. This all disappeared early evening. This went on for almost a year, by this time I was waking up with mucus in the back of my throat.
In that period I went on holiday a couple of times to a dry climate and it all disappeared.
I was put on Fexodine - did not work. Nasal sprays Avamyst & Rhinaspray, both helped for a short time. I saw an ENT Consultant, Endoscopy & MRS Scan on sinuses - All Clear. I even went to Dentist, Optician, Allergy Doctor & Chiropractor - All Clear.
Throughout this time, I was telling the doctors it started after I started taking Carbocisteine, they were all adamant it was not that.
I saw my Thoracic consultant 3 weeks ago (armed with reports from the professionals) explained everything & requested a trial of a different medication.
To my surprise/shock she stopped my medication (a) she believed now that I didn't need the medication (b) a 50/50 chance it was the medication, if it wasn't she told me she could no longer help me.
That was 3 weeks ago.
The first morning of not being on Carbocisteine, I felt a lot brighter & now I am almost back to "normal".
However, I am having a regular back/shoulder & neck sports massage as I believe my sleep position is contributing to the strange feelings I get on each side of my head. I'm told all my right hand side muscles were knotted. Currently this is work in progress & feeling the benefits already.
I am no medical professional - but it could be that you have developed a reaction to medication.
Hopefully my saga has given you a few ideas to pursue.
I wish you all the best in getting to the bottom of your nightmare. Do let us know how you get on.
Thanks for your response. Sounds quite similar to my experience. The good news is I am off abroad in a few weeks and hope to have similar results to yours with the dry climate.
I get something similar, my blocked nose starts when I get in bed ,dont know if it's the position of lying down or allergy, it's a nuisance as nasal drip starts the nasel drip seems to tickle or slightly itch my throat then I'm coughing all night,I'd you find the cause let us know please
hi. I’ve had nasal sinus problems for maybe a year. My nose gets blocked Sometimes I can feel it in my left cheek. I’ve now been put on a stronger nasal steroid spray which seems to be helping I’ve had an MRI and am awaiting results. Think it could just be hay fever most of the year take care x
