I have finally been given a treatment plan by my consultant and I have been put on Azithromycin 3 times a week for the next 4 months as I have had lots of chest infections. Was just wondering how long other people are on this drug for and do you come off it to see how it goes? It does seem to be working at the moment alongside me using an Aerobika. Thanks!

Hi.I have copd and put onto this antibiotic 3 days a week it was for pseudmins sorry about spelling. Been on them for 3 years now seem to be keeping bugs at. I just order via my gp hope all goes well. ❤️
I’ve been off it for about 8 years. I was taken off it in November so I could change one of the drugs for my rheumatoid arthritis which had contraindications with the Azithromycin. I was then put on Doxycycline. In December I had 2 minor chest infections not in February I had a serious chest infection which ended up with me being in hospital for 7 weeks with pneumonia! Needless to say I’m back on the Azithromycin. I started on 250g but the consultant said research showed that it helped asthma patients, for my sins I’m one of those! Now I’m on 500g 3x a week indefinitely.
It was Hydroxychloroquine which caused all the problems because you can’t take it alongside Azithromycin - it can cause heart and lung problems. I successfully took Azithromycin for about 8 years as a prophylactic and only had one chest infection in that time. I also have a lung disease called bronchiecstasis and asthma. While I was on Azithromycin I also was on mtx, etanercept, a biologic which stopped working in 2021, and after that Baricitinib, which didn’t work. Now I’m back in mtx and due to start another biologic, Cimzia, tomorrow, as well as folic acid and 10mg of steroids a day.
They usually give it as a 3mth trial.i just started to benefit frm it at that point + said I didn't want to come off it.it has anti inflammatory benefits too x
My wife has been on Azithro for almost 5 years. No problems and last spirometry test showed oxygen levels had improved. She alsoo has physio 3x per week. As a possible side effect when we both had, in spite of vaccine, Covid, she only had very mild symptoms whereas I felt awful for a week. Take care, Chris.
Hi, I've been taking prophylactic Azithromycin 250mgs from November to April on mon wed & fri for 4 or 5 winters. It's been a game changer against anything turning into an infection. My asthma is always worse in winter months.
Back in Dec 2010 a GP used it as a treatment for pneumonia when I absolutely couldn't go to hospital. It was to take 500mg on 3 consecutive days then 4 days off for 4 weeks. I remember the gp saying that Azith stayed in the system for the off days as well as drying up the mucus & helping inflammation.
I did this regime again 2012/13 after many months of infections & pneumonia plus many different antibiotics that wouldn't shift them. I did the regime I think for 4 months and Azith finally sorted me out.
Weirdly I've never come across anyone else to have been on that 500mg, 3days on & 4 days off regime.
I have been in them for about 12 years. The only time I stop them is when I get an infection and I use other antibiotics. They were a game changer for me
Thank you all for your replies. It’s very interesting and good to know that it sorted a lot of you out with getting lots of chest infections. Will have to see what my consultant says at my next appointment in 4 months time. I am a teacher so the winter months are always bad for me and I can’t get away from these horrible germs! So if this works, I will be very happy! 😃
I've been on them for about 7 years. Have to come off them for three months a years as I have tinnitus. Only had one chest infection in the seven years. Was having to do the two weeks iv antibiotics every so often before I went on it. Originally was on nebulised colomycin as well, but came off that about three years ago after three negative sputum tests for pseudamonas. I went from easily filling a sputum pot to not producing enough to do a sputum sample! Game changer 😎
I spoke too soon! Picked up some nasty gastric bug but with cold symptoms so pre empting it by getting more antibiotics as my chest feels tight, coughing up more than usual! That’s working in a school for you…… ☹️☹️
