Cracked rib
Hi Jellybe. Sorry to hear this. And yes, excessive coughing can cause cracked ribs. 😑 Have you sought any medical advice about it? One or two things you can do to alleviate the pain is to use icing packs, take some pain killers and try to sleep upright to take the pressure off. Oh one more thing, hold a pillow against your chest when you cough. Helps to take the edge off. Rest is really important too. It will probably take a few weeks to feel better. Take care and take it easy.

Hi Cas, thank you for your response. This is the the 3rd time in the last 18 months. I have been wearing heat patches on my left lung for 2 years as will not stop hurting even with my medication and pain relief. I have been using heat pads on my rib also to ease the pain. Sleep is not easy when you are trying to cough up rubbish from my lungs. Thank you
Really sympathise with you Jellybe must be so painful. Can't improve on advice from Caspiana other than to try menthol crystals/Vicks over bowl of hot water to help bring up the mucus. Take good care and plenty of rest
Wishing you well Jellybe. Hopefully the pain will ease shortly. Cas has given you good advice x
Hope you soon feel better. Have you been taught huffing. Breathing techniques are supposed to help not us to cough. Not sure if they always work.
Ouch! I hope you feel better soon xx
I have had a broken rib from coughing. My GP sadly did not believe me that I had so much pain from coughing. Happily my consultant ordered an x-ray and found the problem. I initially did not believe coughing would cause it. However with no history of trauma or bone disease it was the only thing left.
Yes, I have done it twice. Very painful, not a lot you can do except pain killers and support your ribs with a pillow when you cough.
Hi Jellybe. Have you had your bone density tested at all? I have osteoporosis as well as bronchiectasis - so coughing a lot can be hazardous... Hope you get support very soon. Best wishes.
