Hi Flow cannula

My oxygen prescription was recently changed after problems with low oxygen sats due to a variety of infections heart problems and general poor health. The Hi flow machine was installed the day I left hospital but my lovely Baywater technician told me I would have to have special cannulas (cannulae?) which would only supply a mask yet when I was in hospital I distinctly remember being given a nasal prong which was suitable for up to eight litres. Does anyone else have these as I hate maskws.

hello Tykelady. I have a mask attached to cylinder oxygen. I don’t like it but I feel so much more comfortable with it mainly because I think I get gas and air. I have used prong canulla as well in fact they gave me cannula in the beginning. I am with Air Liquide I suppose each company has their own agenda. You could talk to your oxygen assessor I’m sure they would help or is it because it’s a high flow machine. Good luck and stay well

Ho, so sorry to hear that after various health issues you are now needing Hi Flow.

Would you be happy to check with your oxygen nurse that it is indeed possible to use a Hi Flow cannula in the community ( as you did in hospital ) so you can ask Baywater again for one ? If the nurse says yes then do press Baywater for what you need. Don’t give up.

They aren’t my usual supplier and were less than helpful to me when I holidayed in West Wales last summer.

Let us know you get on won’t you ?

Go well,

Pauline

I have always found them very helpful but they do go by the prescription. I will try the oxygen nurse tomorrow. Many thanks for your concern.

Do let us know how you get on please.

All these 02 suppliers are so screwed down by the current contracts they have now with the NHS it is sometimes tricky to fill the prescription.

Go well.

I'm in the US and I did an Amazon search for HFNC high flow nasal cannula and got a return for a five pack for $25. Make sure you are getting one that says it's for high flows and it can handle the liter flow that you require. I work in a hospital and we have cannulas that can handle high flow. So you are correct that the nasal cannulas exist.

Also, there are bubblers that can add humidity that are made for high flows too. I'm not sure if they would work with a home unit but we use them at the hospital.

All the best,

Sarah

I use a nasal cannula. I’m on 15 litres. The cannula is the green one. Baywater supply mine.

I'm hoping that my prescription will be changed to cannulas when I speak to my oxygen nurse.

I'm on 8 litres from a high-flow machine and I use a cannula virtually all the time. I've never heard of this before.
