40% is nearly half. I think you'll keep going a long time yet. Get as much exercise as you can, eat healthily and get infections treated promptly. My lung function went from 54 to 39 to 24 and I'm still plodding on.

Mine was 20% last January. I’ll be getting my annual PFT soon.

I have genetic emphysema due to inherited alpha 1 antitrypson deficiency. It’s very severe now. Stage 4. I have psoriatic arthritis as well. On 19 meds.

Hi Purple, have you thought about Pulmonary Rehab? Many of the forum have done really well on it so speak to your GP and get a referral. Hoping you don’t have to wait too long.

Who knows how long you have to live as many live for a long time with lower lung function. Don’t despair and wishing you a merry Christmas and good new year. Xxxx

Always remember we tend to go down more in Winter months. Mentally too. Try and do some exercise even when sitting and lying there are things we can do. As Sassy says Pulmonary Rehab very much worth it. Take care. x

Hi Purple. Like others have said Pulmonary Rehab will definitely give you a boost.

I think when you stop smoking the lungs start a clear out! Mine certainly did. Nowadays although my lung function is only 33% I don't have too much mucus and no cough. I was diagnosed 13 years ago.

Best wishes.

Hi Purple - A while ago mine was 48 - my breathing is worse, but I am still here - Have not a clue my number now. I just keep going. As CDPO16 says, healthy diet and exercise will help, in fact I have been slipping on exercise of late and feel the worse for it. take care,

Oh Purple_1963 this was my scenario a couple of weeks ago.Personally I have gone into a bit of overdrive trying to improve my home, and rid it of “dust clutter”

As many have already said 40% is almost half ( I was almost the same drop) Many inspirational people on here are much less. Take care 😘

Please don't let this stop you fighting. I know you get down with these diseases when they take a turn for the worse as I do too. 2 weeks ago I just could not stop crying all day everyday. Have they nothing else you could try to make your breathing even slightly better. 😉 pester them, unfortunately you have to some times. Keep posting chook 👍
