Hi people (and ,hopefully new friends) I have just started on oxygen and am finding a comfortable routine to fit around my social life. When I've done my time on the oxygen do I have to use it whilst carrying out normal day to day chores?

Hi Fribox and welcome to the forum, you say you have just been prescribed oxygen 16 hours a day, when you were diagnosed as needing oxygen did they prescribe ambulatory oxygen for walking around and exercise?

Ambulatory oxygen is usually by oxygen bottles or a Portable Oxygen Concentrator, you would need ambulatory oxygen when you go out of your house where your normal stationary oxygen concentrator can’t be used.

I hope I have been some help.

Thank you for your reply.I have got portable oxygen for when I go out and a concentrator for at home.Seems a bit thick to ask,but do I go back into my home supply whilst doing things round the house?

Do you use a small oxygen bottle for your ambulatory oxygen or a Portable Oxygen Concentrator? When I was originally put on oxygen 24/7 I was given a stationary concentrator and small bottles for ambulatory, fortunately now since using BiPAP and Oxygen at bedtime I only have to use a ambulatory oxygen POC throughout the day for walking and exercise and BiPAP and Oxygen at bedtime to treat Co2 Retention.

Using a stationary oxygen concentrator is fine when you are sitting down or at bedtime is fine, but trying to get around the house using a stationary concentrator and trailing oxygen tubing is a nightmare, you are forever tripping over it, I would switch to your oxygen bottle or POC for walking and exercise, it will make your life a lot easier.

I hope I have been some help.

Hi Fribox,

Without using the oxygen either the concentration or flasks I find housework causes my stats to fall. Use what’s more convenient for you. I’ve elderly parents staying with me and it’s not practically for the tubing to be weaving it’s way around the carpets as it’s a trip hazard for them. So I put on the flask with a rucksack. The rucksack frees my hands to get on with the chores.

Any activity reduces my oxygen level so the only time I don't use my oxygen is when I'm out for a meal or being driven to appointments and sometimes if I am just sitting at home. I must admit I only use my cylinders in the house for going up to bed and coming down in the morning as I have an upstairs machine that sees me through the night and the downstairs one sees me through the day.

I suggest you chat to your respiratory team as they know your medical history and needs and will tell you if you need oxygen on exertion such as doing housework. Your oxygen needs will vary according to what you are doing.
