I had Covid in April but got left with a cough which does not seem to be clearing. I have been prescribed Carbocisteine which I have now been taking for three weeks. Has anyone else been given this medication and if so did it help in any way?

I take 5mls three times a day (prescribed 4) and oxycodone plus other meds and I'm ok driving. I only pootle though. I do everything I was doing but with less coughing. I do feel more 'awake' during the day but ready for bed by nine! I used to be a night owl! I don't feel addicted, yet, but it is a small dose.
yes! Definitely improves day to day living in helping to loosen lung mucus making it easier to expel. I've taken it for years. Sometimes I test by missing some out and very soon coughing madly until asthma kicks in coughing even more closing the airways.
Any mucus is far better out than in where it can fester to grow bacteria.
I have bronchiectasis and take carbocisteine to help thin the mucus. It makes it easier to clear the mucus as does my acapella device issued by my specialist. Hope it helps you xxx
I took it. One four times per day as prescribed by my GP and found it to be really good. My consultant then changed it to NACSYS soluble tablets, once per day and have found this to be much better. I have COPD with apparently a touch of asthma. I could be coughing for two hours during the night to expel very little mucus. Now nothing. Magic.
Hiya Nan 157. I have been taking carbocisteine for a number of years now. It took about 5-6 weeks before I noticed a difference. The help to keep mucus thin and easier to expel. This reduces coughing and chest infection. Works great for me. If I remember correctly after about 6 weeks of three doses a day it was reduced down to 2 doses. Persevere with the and your gp will check if you find them helpful, they're very expensive so not prescribed unless necessary but do not work for everyone. If your problem is shifting mucus I would also suggest drinking lots of too. Best wishes
I've been taking them for the past year or so. I have Bronchiectasis, Asthma and COPD.
I was offered them when I kept telling my consultant about a very annoying rattle in my chest that I hardly noticed in the day but kept me awake at night. He listened to my chest and agreed that it was a mucous rattle and prescribed the carbosisteine. The rattle stopped quite soon after I started taking them and, although I still have mucous to cough up, it is very much less now and I don't get the night rattle or wheeze.
They were given to me to try, and, as they have helped, they are now on my repeat prescription.
I was advised by a practitioner I was seeing for something else, that I shouldn't be taking them all the time. She advised me to cut them out and only use 'as and when'. Within a few days, my old rattle and excess mucous returned so I went back to taking them three times a day.
I have been taking carbocysteine for a few years now and find it very good for loosening the gunk in my lungs. If it does build up and I can’t shift it I up the dose by an extra capsule per dose for a couple of days (it clears it well for me)
