Am new here. Hoping to find support as I am anxious. I have not been officially diagnosed with emphysema but for 1 year my chest x-ray shows hyperinflated lungs. The last one showed some changes. My PC is talking about a ct scan. This is making me very anxious as I have a diagnosis of anxiety centered on my health. And of course I goggle searched everything. And of course that is mostly worst case scenarios. I am hoping you all can help me through this.

Hi mommieb and hope your scan is ok. This group has so much experience you’ll almost certainly find someone who’s been in your shoes . You’ll find lots of help, support, and good old common sense here. Wish you all the best x
Hi and welcome. A CT scan will give you a definite diagnosis so that at least you will know what you are dealing with. I think that wondering may cause more anxiety than the uncertainty. There is a lot of useful and relevant information from asthma+lungUK which will help you to live well with lung disease. Dr Google may just frighten you to an extreme degree.
No no NO, Doctor Google is no use to anybody looking for health answers. You GP, Hospital Councillor, Dietician I could go on but you will learn for yourself through the group and medical teams what will be able to put your mind at rest.
Believe me, It is not as bad as it is made out to be,.
With the right help, Advice AND NO doctor Google you will strive.
All the very best to you and please stop worrying.

I am also waiting for a formal diagnosis of COPD/ emphysema. I am currently on the list for a spirometry test .
As others have said, sometimes waiting for a diagnosis causes a lot of anxiety, so it is good that you are having the CT scan. I am sure everything will be OK, and you will know what it is that you are dealing with.
Hi and welcome to the site 😊 It’s only natural that you feel anxious anyone would knowing there s a problem with their own body but not knowing exactly what that problem is or how to fix it . Once you know via the tests you will feel less anxious , whatever the results , because you will then be in a position to deal with it and get on the medication that will make you feel better 😃 Of course you’ve used Google , haven’t we all ,and haven’t we all realised that along with some truth there is an awful lot of misinformation so best to avoid , ask your questions here and you’ll be given accurate information from people who actually live with lung conditions . Finally do try to stop worrying ! It does absolutely no good and will only make you feel more poorly, so do try to distract yourself from negative thoughts The chances are you have years of good quality life in front of you ( my husband was diagnosed with copd , now emphysema almost twenty years ago ) Best wishes 😊x
Hi, a CT scan is an excellent tool for diagnosis so you're extremely lucky to be referred for one - a few members here would give their eye teeth for one!In the mean time concentrate on getting fighting fit, healthy diet, healthy weight, stop smoking if you do (GP will help), drink less alcohol if you think that you more than the healthy limit, learn some breathing techniques (loads of examples on youtube), deep diaphragm breathing helps with anxiety as well as lung stamina, try to change negative head stuff in to positive. Once when I was going through an anxious horrible time my then 8 yr old daughter wrote positive affirmations on Postits all over the house and it was an amazing help. When negative thoughts pop up tell them to naff off.
PS anxiety can make you breath in a shallow way just using the top part of your lungs, can also make you feel short of breath plus make you feel rubbish & even more anxious. P
Hello mommieb, welcome to the site. All the replies here are helpful especially not to google, more so if the cause of your anxiety is your breathing. Try contacting BLF nurses who may be able to advise . In our town we have a course called FAB but its mainly for those with COPD its to help you with advice on coping with breathing difficulties that come with the illness and to assure you anxiety can make it worse but you will come through it. One recommendation is a minifan held close to the face to keep the air you breath in fresher, stay cool , do things to distract you and avoid infections as they do make breathing worse. Talking to others with similar problems can help , hope this helps I have COPD/ Asthma myself , so appreciate how you feel . We talk about all sorts of illness on here not just those that effect our lungs. Plus other topics and hobbies. Hope to speak to you again soon take care x
Hello and welcome to the forum mommieb. Googling your health isn’t a good idea as it will cause your stress levels to rise. Talk to your GP, nurse or consultant and tell them about your worries take care. X
Hi and welcome to this friendly, funny and informative forum. Waiting for results creates so much anxiety, once you have a diagnosis you will be better equipped to manage your condition.
Hello and welcome mommies. Everything has been said about this friendly group. And you will find stories of people who have been living with this disease for 20 years or more. So just keep as healthy as possible and exercise if you can and you will have many more years ahead. Brian
Welcome to the forum. It's so frustrating waiting to find out just what's going on with your body. Once you know you'll be able to deal with it and hopefully the anxiety will recede. Best wishes. xxx
