For those newly diagnosed this recent video is well worth a look.

Good video ck, it was the words of the Registrar at the hospital that impacted on my choice to stop. They were;

"Here is what will happen; for every cigarette you smoke from here on, will cause further lung damage, and you will be coming in here more often"

as opposed to my consultants words previously.

"Now might be a good time to stop smoking"

Needless to say the latter had no impact on me at all.

He does mention that they don’t like to “finger wag”. I wish the consultant I saw first frightened the hell out of me as I also smoked for a few more years.

The other thing that has always stayed with me, I was sitting in the waiting area for the cardiac check when first diagnosed, there was a guy sitting there also with his wife. His breathing was really difficult, he didn't have oxygen, he could barely breathe to talk (I do remember being like that at certain times and the exhaustion that goes with that).

I realised his difficulty but I figured as his wife was with him perhaps she could answer, I asked if he also had emphysema as that was my diagnosis. Both said yes, and the gentleman carried on talking, he told me, its important to avoid anyone with a cold or flu virus to help preserve your lungs. He went on to say, every year his grandchildren came to visit at Christmas, every year they came with a cold, every year he would get a serious lung infection and end up in hospital. He said it was either that or not see his grandchildren. Very sad that he was actually sacrificing his lung health in order to see his grandchildren. A very difficult situation for him.

I always remember his words.

Now with the covid situation and have shielded I was not getting exposure to the usual winter bugs so I think I am going to be shielding most winters each year now.

Yes an interesting video but my only concern is that the video is promoting a health clinic in the private sector of medical care and i personaly prefer to take my advice from parties that have no financial interests in my health care even if they are supposedly a non profit organisation.Nevertheless thank you for advising us of their services.
