Three cheers (and a wage increase) for our paramedics

I had my lung function test today. Results from consultant in four weeks.

My husband and I arrived a bit early so waited outside. Also waiting was a sweet little boy, about 3 or 4 years old, with a lady.

An ambulance was parked up.

Out came the paramedics from the hospital and seeing the little boy's interest offered him a closer look but he was too shy. So instead they turned the lights on, went over to him, down to height and told him they'd turned the blue lights on just for him.

The look of wonder on his face was priceless. they spoke gently to him and gave him a little torch as a gift.

It only took a few moments from their busy day but brought joy to all of us.

How lovely that, should the little boy ever need an ambulance, he will have memories of kindness, that will surely make it easier for him.

Some years back, when the ambulance men were asking for a decent wage, a politician said that anyone could drive an ambulance. Maybe anyone could drive the ambulance but it takes a special person to be an ambulance man.

They always manage to be so kind and caring do the ambulance staff in spite of the poor way they are treated by their management.

How lovely and yes it does take a really special person to bring the ambulance service. Have a good night and take care 😊 Bernadette and Jack 🐕 xxxxxx

What a lovely story. All the paramedics I have met have been great. And — of course — now they have much more training than driving. The vast majority of folk are kind, decent and compassionate. But, sadly, it is the obnoxious ones who stick in our minds. Thank you

That's indeed s lovely thing to do. There are still some people out there who are blessed with kindness. It will be a lovely memory for the little boy.

Nice observation wheezyof 😁👍 thanks for sharing this story.

What an uplifting story wheezyof, and yes maybe anyone could drive an ambulance but to be a paramedic takes training and courage. They deserve a good pay rise as do the nursing and other staff. Xxx

They have always been so helpful and non-judgmental when I've had to call them.

Lovely story and yes they seem to be unfailing kind and non-judgemental despite having some grim situations (and people!) to deal with.

I expect that really made that little boys day, really kind of them, thank you for sharing. As for what that politician said, I know someone who is a paramedic and if anyone can do it why do the paramedics have to take a special driving test to drive one?

Except a politician that is, they would never do the job, the hours are much too long and hard, the pay is much too low and there are no expenses and perks. Paramedics do an exemplary job, often in really difficult circumstances.

No surprise that the paramedics took the time to talk to the child. My brother is paramedic and often goes into schools to create awareness about their role etc.

One of the many professions that need a pay rise and only a stupid politician could make this statement. Such a caring role, they have my respect x

A heartwarming incident. I’ve great respect for paramedics as they are out there working alone without support from hospital staff, and have to make on the spot decisions, and sometimes in dire circumstances. Of course they have their training but none the less are the first point of contact in the community. Thanks for sharing. Stay well and safe. 👍🤗xx

Paramedics are our life savers!! I cannot imagine all they do in a days work to save lives. It takes such a special and trained person to do this work and to most it is not just a job... it's a calling. How wonderful they took the time to make a little boys day amazing! To all paramedics throughout the world we applaud you!! You truly are our life savers!!

The ambulance teams we have encountered have always been absolutely wonderful and I can imagine that all of them would have been happy to engage with a little boy in that way. As you say, if he has to encounter the ambulance service in future, he will no doubt be less anxious as a result of their thoughtfulness. Three cheers for them! xx Moy
