I was prescribed a replacement spacer at my COPD review last week.

Changes are : An anti-static coating. An inhalation indicator. The mouthpiece/valve is now detachable for ease of cleaning pupoises.

Cruddy is how I best describe my old mouthpiece. Fostair produces a hard film that will not wash off by soaking at all, it is like cement. I hope the new antistatic coating helps.

Have you ever tried Milton sterilising fluid? If it’s safe for baby’s bottles and dentures it should be ok for the mouthpiece of a spacer. Just a thought ...I don’t use a spacer by the way!

Yes, fostair does build up a film that eventually is impossible to wash off. At first I though that I wasn't washing them properly.

I buy Compact Space Chamber Plus spacers as I can't tidal breathe with the AeroChamber. They are available on prescription but one a year certainly wouldn't be enough so I prefer to buy them. Have 2 so that I always have one to use while waiting for a washed one to air dry and a spare for when one needs throwing away. They are also compact so convenient for taking out if needed.

I use a baby's bottle brush to clean mine

Tried that, even though not recommended. Made no difference!

Like I said, it is just like cement and it does not take long to build up either, my old one is almost 5 months old and fit for the bin.

I've find that my spacer starts to show a film after 3 or 4 days and I usually wash it at least every 5 days. While in hospital last year, a doctor said that when it clouds up it will stop the ventolin from passing through the spacer properly. I use my ventolin 15 minutes before the fostair.

I have even tried soaking in white vinegar and Coca-Cola to no effect.

☺ not tried that.

I've got an AeroChamber and I can tidal breathe with it as it has a little valve that allows for you to do it. xx Moy

Tried many times Moy, husband can do it but I can't.

Oh, I see. I thought you meant the Aero Chamber wasn't suitable for it. I mentioned that I had one because I had to specifically ask for that one instead of the normal one. xx Moy

I don't have a problem with my compact space chambers. Stone UK told us about them a few years ago and they suit me well.

I use them too and for some reason my Ventolin seems to last longer used with it..... can’t see how it possibly can so must be an illusion! I just wish it had a cap on it as the aero chamber ones do.

The new type still clouds up.

☹️ That is not good, I wonder what happens inside our lungs? Replace gooey tar from tobacco with a cement like substance.

Gosh that’s a thought ...... doesn’t bear thinking about!
