Glad to see you have had some blue sky today, dull as ditchwater here in Wiltshire for days!

Do you have a little history of the lighthouse Blackbird? I love old things that had a purpose at one time. In fact I love social history full stop!Such an interesting shape this one.

I'm glad I did, it was so interesting. A very historical place. Thanks Blackbird

Very similar to the Cape Cod lighthouses in USA. In those parts the list of West country places names is astounding - Weymouth, Plymouth, Barnstaple Town, Falmouth, Taunton to name but a few. I would think given tha, the lighthouse design emigrated along with folk!

I agree Annie we've seen them, and the areas are lovely and some very English. Jane (wish I could travel)

Here's some more I remember, Bristol, Wareham, Torrington, Dartmouth, Newport! There's stacks of them from other parts as well, I suppose that's why it's New England!

I like blue skies to cheer us up too in this grey weather. It looks a very windy place. I would like to know the history too . Very small light house but so it must be very flat around there.

Blackbird thanks for the info. That is so surprising. The old lighthouse at Lepe is a very young lighthouse, in fact built in 2000 for the millennium . Most surprising, and what a good idea . A lasting memory. I thought it looked like something from New England but nΓ², not at all. And I learnt more about the d day structures in the area too .and i didnt know that the coastgaurd was older than I would have thought Started in 1828. Lighthouses can be found d in most unexpected places Best lighthouse that ive been too was on a deserted island in Hebrides Had just 3 men stationed there then Now it is automated. Thanks

Yes its quite a historical area around the beach and you can walk for miles but being it a very coastal area lots of visitors coming in from who knows where .. I walk here early or late afternoon to avoid the hoards and always down the quiet end ☺️

Blackbird8 in reply to Alberta56

Pine trees ?? πŸ™‚

Alberta56 profile image
Alberta56 in reply to Blackbird8

The trees look to me like the pines in the Suffolk Sandlings, not to mention Ernest Sheppard's drawings of pines in the Hundred Acre Wood. My daughter agrees. Is there an arboriculturalist in the house? The lighthouse reminds us of a funny little drainage mill on Hickling Broad in Norfolk, which an artist converted into a studio. xx

Blackbird8 profile image
Blackbird8 in reply to Alberta56

They aren't pines and nobody lives in the lighthouse it's a tiny place it's about 20 foot high and the bushes around are forest yellow flowering gorse that have been left to grow πŸ™‚
