I hope you all won’t mind me asking did any of you have an extraction during this pandemic and if you did how safely was it carried out. My tooth broke in half and I need it out, I read that I would need O2 having this done because the procedure causes a drop in oxygen levels, as I only have 35%lung function I am worried. I was 69 this year and am not on oxygen, I walk everyday weather permitting.
Kind Regards
Bernadette

My dentist is undertaking some work under strict hygiene routunes. Only one patient at a time is allowed into the surgery, the staff are wearing full PPE and the treatment room is thoroughly cleaned between patients. I think all dentists will be working in the same way to protect both themselves and their patients.
I don’t have COPD , but severe asthma, and it wasn’t the dentist but maxillofacial clinic, but I had to have a soft tissue lump removed from under my tongue. From a safety point of view I felt really safe! Everybody was wearing full PPE & the staff reassured me that everything was cleaned very thoroughly. My O2 did drop a bit but thankfully came back up quite quickly.
Like the others said, maybe chat to your dentist first!
My understanding is, no routine dentistry only emergency dental treatment. Sounds like your situation is an emergency. No doubt you will have received information from the clinic if you are going to be sedated. If you are not clear on anything best ask the clinic about the procedure and safety.
Thanks for that information, I am in Ireland and as far as I know we do not have clinics except for one dental hospital, it would be a private dentist practice that would have to do it but I have read they are hesitant about taking someone who is high risk.
I’ve worked at a dental Practice for 38 years. I’m still off at the minute while they find the best way to get me back.
All Dental Practices have strict guidelines to follow to ensure they are Covid secure. You shouldn’t have to worry about that aspect at all.
With regard to supplementary oxygen, I’ve never known it to be given during any procedure. However, if you feel it would benefit you, the dental team will work around any requirements you have.
I haven’t had advice from anyone yet, I googled regarding this and it said oxygen levels drop and dentists don’t like to take any risky patients, because of Covid I have not been to a consultant since February
Thanks so much for your reply, my dentist sent me to the dental hospital years ago for an extraction and there was no Covid then! But I appreciate your time and concern.
Ahh you’re welcome! Not sure I helped! I just hope you get sorted out in a way that’s best for you & that you feel safe & happy... as happy as you can be having a tooth extracted 🙈
I'm having dental treatment at the moment, the dentist and assistant are all covered up and the surgery is cleaned after each session. Talk to your dentist about your worries, I'm sure they will put your mind at rest x
Hello Bernadette, I broke a tooth but was advised not to have an extraction due to infection risks, and as I am due to have surgery on the Ist of October he did not want to risk gum infection. I have a root filling in that tooth so no fear of pain so he did a cosmetic type patch up instead. The tooth is still Ok . I got an appointment quickly and told to ring back if any problem with it. They can sometimes do a temporary cap if you have no pain. Times have changed but some dentists are still only doing emergency treatment. If your Oxygen level is a problem you can be referred to hospital for treatment. I only have local anaesthetic, but you can have a relaxant if its the dentist too. Maybe you need to seek more advice from a dentist i.e ring for triage. We are all different even if we have same illness or problem. Good luck with it x
