Over the last few months, there has been much discussion of leadership during the pandemic. What constitutes good leadership? Who has performed better and which countries have been worse? One pattern that emerged early on was that female leaders were seen to have handled the crisis remarkably well. Whether it has been New Zealand under Jacinda Ardern or Taiwan under the presidency of Tsai Ing-Wen or Germany under Angela Merkel, female-led countries have been held up as examples of how to manage a pandemic.
We decided to investigate whether this anecdotal perception stands up to more systematic scrutiny. To do this, we analysed how leaders around the world reacted to the early days of the pandemic to see whether differences in performance can be explained by differences in policy measures adopted by male and female leaders.
Variables are to many and data to raw to extrapolate any real definite assumptions , new Zealand had very low infection rates and Germany is one of the richest countries in the world so obviously they will handle cv19v better , im always dubious of the spin ( and its ALWAYS there ) when they start pitting gender ,race and political leanings to prove a point , and who it is actually putting these opinions out ? thats not to say they are not accurate of course and that should not just be rejected by the obvious bias the piece has in its eye catching header
Aside from posting this under General Conversation, not as Coronavirus, I meant it to be as a point of discussion/debate on a Sunday afternoon, which of course you are doing. The eye catching header can easily be verified or dismissed from the data collected from around the world, Dr. John presents many of these in graph form. Whether it is meaningful is not for me to say, being a Kiwi I could be seen as holding a bias, so I will have to remain gender and country neutral
You could always say i was biased but women are generally better at time managin g than men so why not in this case too . I suspect that women instinctively look at the health issue first and economy comes first with men . Who is to say who is right as we need both ,. The balance is and timing are crucial.
Personally I am very unimpressed with the men in government at present as are many Conservative MPs in parliament.
Maybe women are more likely to have a detail orientated mind useful in a situation like this ? Bojo famously ' doesnt do details '. I suspect it's not Trump's strong point either ! ( actually not sure he's got a strong point )
