I have 2 lung diseases, and heart problem stent fitted. I have ambulatory oxygen even when walking I become extremely tired I also use a collator to support me. I am in a dilemma whereby instant to walk but I do not have the stamina, I don't even get round the shops these days. I don't want a mobility scooter as I want to walk when I can. Any ideas what I could do.
Hello, thanks I already have 4 wheeled collator with seat. Which is great when I get tired but I have to wait to recover before I can walk again. Ideally something that I could use to walk with but then be pushed when it all becomes too much, which is more than often these days.
Using a mobility scooter didn't stop me walking: I just made sure that when I went to shops, I locked the scooter and left it outside. So I was still doing the walking, but not enough to cause me serious problems.
I first used one when I was about 47 and needing a knee replacement op because of road accident damage from years before. There was a place in town where people struggling could hire a mobility scooter for free to go around the shops. I tried one and was amazed at how it opened out my life at that point. I could walk the dog again, do my shopping, meet friends in town, go to church. So I got one for myself which I used for a couple of years, until after the knee replacement op and my recovery.
Hi Annie can you set yourself a small target each day whereby you do a short walk and then each day you go just a little bit further this will slowly get your muscles working and in time build up your stamina don't expect miracles just do a little bit further each day. It will help as I have had to do it myself.
My husband was looking at wheelchairs, thinking of the future for me, he saw one that converts from rollator to wheelchair by flipping the handles over. I'm sorry I didn't take the name down or keep the paperwork.
There are lots of different companies making mobility aids. You could try an internet search.
If you could contact a physiotherapist they may have some ideas to help you.
You are correct you can find plenty on line I bought one similar to what your Hubby spotted on line, think the company was caremobility they supply to NHS also. Mine was not as dear as those advertised on TV it came from a company called NRS healthcare in Coalville UK . Hope Annie reads my reply to you.
That's very useful to know. I have a small transit chair in the car boot but it's not good for walking with. Thanks for that info. I'll look into it for when it might feel safe to venture out again.
Hi iowasds3110, thank you for your post, you appear to be in the same boat as myself. I have lung condition and arthritis at present waiting for a knee replacement op. I bought one of the Rollators which you can use for walking & as a transport seat to car, plus sitting on it if really tired. It was cheaper than a scooter but still not the answer for me because my walking is so limited at present. I am sure a scooter would fit the bill for you, You can get upto three demonstrated at home gives an idea of what you can manage. Would not recommend the very lightweight car ones as it a rough passage on the bumpy pavements. I found middle of the range was a good option. Take care with switches that regulate the brakes ect certain ones are not easy if you have arthritic hands. Hope this info helps best wishes with your choice.
Hi Annie, I’m in a similar situation to you, just before shielding, I bought a small folding (by remote control) mobility scooter, easily lifted by a strongish person and put in boot. I only managed two outdoor outings before lockdown but oh boy! What a difference it made. I went around the local garden centre and for lunch. Just parked up and walked to the table. Also had a ‘walk’ in the park with my son, it was so nice just to motor alongside him chatting. During lockdown I’ve used it in the garden, dragging the hose with me. I’d thoroughly recommend you look into getting one. I only gave in to family pressure as I was missing out on family outings. I haven’t been to a supermarket etc yet but don’t plan to use it on those occasions. Btw. I use oxygen 24/7. Joy x
Your post has given me an incentive now to look at folding mobility scooter, would you mind me asking which one you have , as I don’t know where to start .
Thanks for asking this question, Annie. You have indirectly helped me too. I wasn't aware of rollators that convert. I hope you find something to suit your needs. Carole x
