Hi, is there an estimated date for shielding to be finished to feel it bit more freely?

At the moment it is 30th of June, but it will be reviewed before then. It looks as though it will be extended for some groups.

When was it stated that 30th June was the end. I thought it was 12 weeks from 23rd March making it 14th June.

Hi Hallentine, it is on the government website. I’ve just been watching the gov briefing with Boris Johnson. Someone asked a question about it and either the chief medical advisor or the scientific advisor said that would have to draw up a timeline for us coming out. Boris said something about they would be updating us soon. They did say that at the moment there is too much infection in the community to lift the restrictions on us just yet.

Unknown till we know - I would suspect it will be down to how severe someones illness/s are and how populated is the area they live. To some extent its our choice even when shielding is eased some, which is not yet. Check the graphs on the future strategy for current situation in May its still very much with us.

The shielding date has been extended to 30th June by the government so fingers crossed that we don't have a second spike so that it is extended again.

Staying at home and shielding

If you’re clinically extremely vulnerable, you’re strongly advised to stay at home at all times and avoid any face-to-face contact to protect yourself.

This is called ‘shielding’ and the advice is:

Do not leave your house.

Do not attend any gatherings, including gatherings of friends and families in private spaces, for example, family homes, weddings and religious services.

Strictly avoid contact with someone who is displaying symptoms of coronavirus (COVID-19).

The Government is currently advising people to shield until 30 June 2020 and is regularly monitoring this position.

Hi , it is 30th June ,but some people have letters from their consultants extending theirs to August due to their conditions . My husband has been told by his consultant he doesn’t want him out .

Seems to be a lot of confusion with this - my OH had a letter from his surgery which tells him to shield til 20 July. He is itching for information as to how shielding will start to ease!

I have a letter from public Health England stating 12 weeks from the date of this letter. The letter is dated 05/05/20 so that takes me to August.

Bear in mind that shielding is advice, and no-one is under any obligation or legal duty to do it. But it does help if you are employed (for furloughing purposes), and if you need help with shopping or prescriptions. And, of course, it helps the NHS by reducing your chances of becoming ill.

Regardless of the the official end date, you are still entitled to make your own judgement. For instance, I was social distancing at least a week before the advice, and largely isolating before that advice, because it seemed the appropriate thing to do. My wife is shielding, so I am as well - I don't have to (according to the advice) but it seems sensible to do so. But then our neighbours have been very helpful and not everyone is that lucky.

In the end, you are best placed to decide the most appropriate action to take for your own and others health because everyone's individual circumstances are different. I realise that this argument has recently been tested and found wanting, but it is still possible to find the right balance whilst keeping strictly within the guidelines.

Here in the US the advice if you are over 60 and have an underlying condition is to shield forever. After going almost 3 months without seeing my beautiful grandchildren...thats enough for me.
