I have post nasal drip which constantly runs mucus down the back of my throat. Every time I clean my teeth, I also clean out the cavity between the throat and the sinuses where it comes from by swooshing a little water up there and then shaping the back of my mouth to suction the mucus out. I then swallow it or spit it out in the sink. Usually need to do this about 5+ times each session, but it works for me.

I take Carbocisteine 375mg. one x four times a day (this also comes in liquid form if you find it difficult to swallow tablets in an "exciting gooseberry flavour"). I have been taking this in tablet form for about a year and it helps to loosen the phlegm and makes it easier to "bring it up" as it were.

The Respiratory Clinic Nurse assures me that increased phlegm is all part and parcel of COPD and she was the one who originally prescribed this for me.

I do not have a hiatus hernia but because I take so many pills (apart from inhalers) I also take Omeprazole one x twice a day. My daughter suggested that I take this - along with any other tablets - 20 minutes BEFORE my breakfast and 20 minutes BEFORE my evening meal and she was right IT WORKED FOR ME. Omeprazole lines the stomach ...….. so by taking it 20 minutes BEFORE meals it gives it a "head start" on the Cornflakes/Bacon and Eggs.

Do try it and I hope it works for you

Hi bardear, thanks for that. I was prescribed carbocisteine but I ve been wary about taking too many kinds of medication.however I'm going to start taking it as the mucus problem is just too much.and it is difficult for me to spit it out as it is far back at the throat,so it just easily goes down with the saliva. I've read somewhere that taking omeprazole for longer than two years ,puts you at risk for heart and kidney disease and bone fractures.does anyone know about this? My gp recommended taking magnesium supplements.

In Dec 2018 I had surgery but only because my intestines had pushed through my diaphragm and twisted on itself so had to have endoscopy to push it back and surgery to repair haitus hernia and tightened osophegus. Not pleasant. I was in 2 nights and no solid food for 6 weeks but no reflux problems since. Before this op I found Gaviscon Advance gave me the most relief.
