Bread pudding

I don't do much cooking, I get so breathless and frustrated. However today I made a bread pudding.

My husband and I don't eat white bread but there was a loaf in our government box. We froze it last week. So using the white bread, a carton of UHT milk (also from the box), a couple of eggs and butter with the last of the brown sugar and dried fruit from the larder I made a bread pudding.

While the bread and fruit soaked up the liquid I rested too.

Husband collected the ingredients together for me and lifted the pan in and out of the oven.

I was pretty puffed after but it turned out okay.

I'd never made one with white bread before.

A small victory for me and a big thank you to the government for the box.

Bread and butter pud is wonderful but doesn't keep. I found that the worse the bread the better the pudding. Well done

Ah... I think there are some crossed wires here? Bread pudding is not the same as bread and butter pudding. Correct me if I wrong wheezyof ?

I think some recipes use suet rather than butter. But butter will be better.

You are right, bread and butter pudding is very different. Bread pudding is all mashed together before baking into a stodgy 'cake'. Bread and butter pudding is buttered bread, layered with dried fruit (or some people use jam), soaked in a mix of egg and milk. Left not mashed and baked. Best results are if the layers are tilted so it has crispy peaks.

Inside bread and butter pudding is lighter and quite soggy.

That brought back memories. My nana made delicious bread pudding but always with jam and never fruit. It was baked until the top was nice and crispy. I loved having tea at her house when she had made one. Hope you enjoy yours, making good use of your government bread and UHT milk.

Well done for making what sounds like a very nice pudding. I remember my Gran making it.

If you have any fresh, frozen or tinned fruit you could also make a summer pudding with some of the white bread.

Thank you for that. We are getting very good at using up stuff from the cupboards. Just cooked some brown lentils (BB 2016). Tomorrow I will cook butter beans, same vintage, to make a hummus type dip.

Yay!

I loved bread pudding with loads of custard, I don't think I'll ever get to manage making that. 😕

I sense your pleasure in what you have accomplished wheezy and well done for making that effort. It's surprising how we are all using up the remnants of our cupboards. Actually I like bread and butter pudding and haven't made one for ages. Perhaps it's time to test my skills again. What will you try next?

😆👍👌👏

I used to cook a lot, bake bread and biscuits, cakes and buns. Cook curries, pies, casseroles...

The dreaded lung problem leaves me far too breathless. Now my husband caters for us. I get to shell boiled eggs or chop mushrooms.

It so nice to hear you and your husband have each other and support each other. What is that line in our marriage vows? For better, for worse, for richer and poorer.

You take care my dear and look after each other.

My husband's Aunt used to make wonderful bread pudding. She soaked her fruit in brandy overnight before adding it to the mix. It wouldn't do to get breathalysed after eating it!!

As for bread and butter pudding, I haven't made it for a very long time, but I love it, so may now have a go. It's just something I'd forgotten about. Looking forward to it now! xx Moy

I used to do a lot of baking. A rather pompous man was at a wedding tucking into the cake "This cake is sodden with alcohol! I'll fail a breathalyser. It's sodden!" I quipped back "Well don't eat the soddin' cake then" He didn't like it when everyone laughed at him.

I got lots of people liking my cake.
