Child shielding

Hi, I have received a shielding letter for my teenager but some of the directions are difficult for them to accept. Does anyone else have a child in this situation, and how are you dealing with it?

Hi Pokermon , sorry to hear you’re in the same situation. The letter basically says stay in your home and keep 2m away from anyone else in the house, including eating your meals in your room. We’re doing our best with the spacing but she wants to stay with us for meals etc.

Take care of yourself x

We have been indoors now for five weeks as they wanted to keep me safe so we don't keep away from each other as not been near anyone but imagine iit is harder if certain ones still have to leave the house and might bring it back with them hard times fingers crossed it ends sooner than they say.

Have seen a copy of a letter and thought you had to stay away from others in your household if they were showing signs if illness. But not sure if that's right.

If anybody in your household is going out then they have to stay 2m away from you, use different bathroom (if possible otherwise thoroughly clean it after use every time!) and use kitchen and eat separate from you. If you have all been in for over 14 days together they can be shielding too and so life can be normal in your house.

Not exactly the same situation, but my daughters (10 & 13) are shielding because I have to. My husband is disabled and isn’t able to work, so we are shielding together so that I don’t have to isolate myself from the rest of the family. I understand that that isn’t an option for everyone, but is there anyone else in the house who doesn’t have to go out who would be able shield with your teen for solidarity. If not I would suggest that you have a frank talk with your teen about the risks of not doing it. Perhaps you could have joint meals via Skype/FaceTime or similar app so they don’t feel so excluded.

I have since received a shielding letter for myself (have an autoimmune condition) so we’ve decided to self isolate as a family with hubby and I working from home and getting shopping delivered. We haven’t been out in 2 weeks so should be ok, but still encouraging hand washing and distancing just in case. Thanks to everyone for your input- it helps having someone to work these things out with
