Exercise incentive

Hi all.

Well decided I needed to get more exercise as I need to strengthen my knees after an upcoming meniscus operation. (Lifting too much weight while working on my car tore then in both knees).

So now I have no option but to go for walks at least 4 times a day and usually 6 times.

This is Duke - a doberman as you can see)) I found him at a rescue centre in Bahrain. He has lopsided ears and a badly docked tail. The previous owner did a very poor job trying to get the classic attack dog look((

He is about 10 or 12 months and very bouncy as still really a puppy. I was wary at first but after meeting him and taking him in for a couple days I find that he is one of the most friendly dogs I have had. He does chase, he doesn't bark at people and when walking he generally just ignores people that pass bye. Even after just the week I have had him he is learning quickly and keeping me active. 1 week and so far we have walked over 100 km.

I think he is a keeper ))) especially after a walk when he assumes the position in the picture))

You both seem very happy together already 😊

Yes probably)) always been wary of doberman because of the attack dog reputation but this guy is just a big soft- so far ))

Training him properly will be the key to a happy relationship and my and my neighbours sanity. But he is very intelligent and is learning quickly

He looks very cute, lying there. Good of you, Andy, to adopt him. Sounds like he didn’t have a very good start in life after his botched cosmetic surgery.

I agree with you that he will need good training but he’s young and if he’s intelligent and given firm, consistent handling he should be fine and you’ll have a very good companion for your walk.

Our dear Cas got Chom from a rescue and he’s been such a devoted friend and support to her and I hope Duke will be the same for you,

Let us know how he gets on,

Best wishes

Corin

That poor lad, I hope his previous owners were dealt with severely. I reckon you’ve found a ideal friend there at just the right time for both of you.😀

Lovely dog, lovely story and what a lovely person you are to take a rescue dog into your life. Have you had a dog before Andy? I'm sure you will both thrive on the love you will give to each other. Get strong and Keep well. Lovely view by the way. Where is it?

Brilliant that you have chosen a rescue dog and commend you for that. Totally jealous too, I know just how faithful rescue dogs can be, a friend of mine has two, one from Spain and one from Romania. I am going to miss his dogs greatly who I treat as friends also, with the forthcoming isolation order.

We are not allowed to have a dog :( only cats, fish and caged? birds, although I do let my parrot out as much as I can, birds need exercise as well as interaction.

Yes birds need exercise too - I took over my mothers aviary (cockatiels and finches- a lot of them) and they were very energetic in the cage. She also had, and pardon the unintended similarity, 2 greys both of which were let out of the cages as often as possible, just before she died we donated them to a zoo in North Wales where to the best of my knowledge they both still live.

Hi Andy. 😁👋 So glad you have your beautiful rescue dog. Just be careful in the heat. 35C heat is much, much hotter on concrete, and it may hurt his paws. Just saying.......🐕💓

Too true - it has been difficult to find a good place to walk that keeps us in the shade

Yes and sand gets even hotter but at the moment things are ok and when it really gets warm😁 he will be walking before the sun rises and after it sets. During the day I am getting a treadmill that he can run on so only out for toilet during the heat and I am lucky that my apartment block is facing east so by 12 noon the sea side is in shadow so a lot cooler. Just hoping the jogging machine will keep his weight down.

At the moment he needs to put on about 10kg to meet the weight he should be as an adult (have another 12 months before he gets there) but he does need to put on a bit to hide his ribs and spine.
