Hi homegirl59, the rate will vary from person to person. We're all different and each of us has a unique experience even with having the same condition so I don't know if anyone can give you a definitive answer. Just do the best you can and that will slow the progression way down.

It's supposed to revert to the same rate of deterioration as a non smokers lungs do with age.

However, that's unlikely to be the same for everyone either.

Basically how long is a length of string? In my case after giving up smoking my FEV1 went from low 50s to high 60s. My consultant said my chances of living a "normal" lifespan are good but nobody can predict the future. The only sure thiNg is that continuing to smoke will vastly reduce your chances.

According to the people that know everyone declines ,7%-1.2% per annum. An Emphysema patient declines at 1,9% per annum and it can suddenly get worse with infections. The study that I've read included a 3000 test group and the latest stats actually says that if an Emphysema patient stop smoking, his rate will decline the same as a non smoker within 2 years. They also said that this can differ from person to person but everything being normal this was the results they got. Like Badbessie, mine also went from 67% to 74% 3 Months after I stopped smoking, and it is still the same 4 years later.
