Deadly ‘superbugs’ destroyed by molecular drills.

Molecular drills have gained the ability to target and destroy deadly bacteria that have evolved resistance to nearly all antibiotics. In some cases, the drills make the antibiotics effective once again.

Researchers at Rice University, Texas A&M University, Biola University and Durham (U.K.) University showed that motorized molecules developed in the Rice lab of chemist James Tour are effective at killing antibiotic-resistant microbes within minutes.

“These superbugs could kill 10 million people a year by 2050, way overtaking cancer,” Tour said. “These are nightmare bacteria; they don’t respond to anything.” The motors target the bacteria and, once activated with light, burrow through their exteriors.

Nobody has replied. I was hoping to learn more from reading replies. I have not heard anything about this at all. Admittedly I do rely on 2 greys for new developments but can somebody tell me anything about nano particles i have read the article but i need some basics. How can light activate

?individual molecules make them spin fast enough to actually ďrill through complicated cell membranes. Is this solar energy..? How can light penetrate the tissues such as lungs.? Or anything that isnt on the surface.

I will see if I can find articles to answer your question when I get home from work.

Somehow I missed this whole post. How fascinating (and how scary about these superbugs) I had no idea nano particles were known about and understood so long ago, I thought it's a new technology and mainly the stuff of science fiction.
