Hi I have Copd non smoker and there’s an area in my ct scan that the doctors described as looking like a bullae, it’s apparently an unidentified disease or unusual looking bullae like structure. They won’t investigate further at the moment as I’m recovering from post bronchoscope haemoptysis and the risk of that happening again is too high. There has been no treatment suggested and no change of medicine either. I have been getting lots of test done and am going for a lung function test next week. Good luck with finding out more about it and I hope to follow your story.

Hi Lally

A bulla is a fluid filled sac , fluid trapped under a thin layer of skin or tissue. Bullae is plural. As far as I am aware.

I had a Bullectomy and pleural abrasion 30 years ago through keyhole surgery. But my lung had many bullae and blebs, had collapsed 3 times.

From what I was told back then bulla themselves can occur in anyone and may just disappear on their own. So just leave and monitor if needed.

I think mine was just extreme. Also with more information and advancement there is different protocol.

I never had a CT just x rays, many x rays.

Perhaps ask your GP or BLF they could tell you more .

Wishing you all the best.

I think it depends on the size and number of bullae. In the lung it’s an air filled cavity. In emphysema the inside of the avoli is destroyed, bullae means the whole avoli has been destroyed, therefore creating the air sac.

Hi Lally

Sorry wrote reply earlier when I was a bit sleepy. Bulla do of course contain air not fluid.

Hope it all goes well for you.

Bullae are where the walls of the tiny alvioli have broken down making a bigger space.

Large bullae are about 1 cm across. Ive had bullae for years and they seem stable. There is a condition called bullous emphysema where this alvioli breakdown continues growing and can take over the lung but I think it's quite rare.
