I have COPD,I would so much appreciate some advise what to do.

I had my spleen removed about 8 years ago and have been taking two Penicillin tablets each day I normally see the same doctor most visits ,unfortunately he has taken sick ,so had to see another doctor he asked me why I am taking Penicillin so I told him because I have no spleen he said, did no other doctor tell you it's so dangerous taking Penicillin,I can live perfectly without taking Penicillin,Penicillin is only for infections.

So what do I do,as my doctor is still unavailable.

Sorry I've never heard of using penicillin the way your doctor says.

Also I have sever COPD and sever ASTHMA, my doc has me on Spiriva and Symbicort and I've never felt so good again. All I can say is read all you can about your illness. Dont depend solely on your doctor. It's a team effort and you and your doc needs work together to find what works for you ...individually. read up and have questions for your doc.

"After splenectomy, clots join infection as potential risks"

"Dr. Crary recommended continuing years-long or even lifelong prophylactic penicillin when indicated for potential infection."

Lifelong prophylactic antibiotics is a NICE and NHS recommendation!

I thought this was solved 9 months ago when you had a similar problem?

"It's recommended that you take low-dose antibiotics for the rest of your life to prevent bacterial infections."

Hi Susan 1200. I had my spleen removed 25 years ago and have been on 2 penicillin tabs daily ever since.

Due to my other health issues I see several professional medical people in a year and not one has ever said I shouldn't be taking long-term antibiotics. In fact most of them guess why!

The spleen is a major contributor to our immune system and without one we need antibiotics to give us some sort of protection .

So from one spleen-free person to another. " keep on popping those pills ! "
