Sugar binges increase risk of inflammatory bowel disease, study suggests.
Just two days of high-sugar diet increases susceptibility to colitis and worsens symptoms in mice, U of A researchers find.
Short-term increases in sugar consumption could increase the risk of inflammatory bowel disease and have a significant impact on our health, a new study out of the University of Alberta suggests. In a study published in Scientific Reports, U of A researchers found that mice had an increased susceptibility to chemically induced colitis and more severe symptoms after only two days of a high-sugar diet compared with those eating a balanced diet.
Karen Madsen, who specializes in diet and its effects on inflammatory bowel disease, said the results echo what many patients with colitis have been saying for a long time: small changes in their diet can make their symptoms flare up.
That’s quite worrying. I eat way too much sugar, but also recently I’ve tried to stick to the thing of not eating too much sugar in the week but then pretty much living on sugar all weekend. It would seem that’s not at all good. I must really try to cut down my sugar intake 😞
I hate sweet things! It's been a blessing to me! As a child at birthday parties,it was me finishing the egg sandwiches off, jelly and ice cream were ignored! I can only eat the cakes etc that I bake myself,I put half the sugar in. In summer,I eat pounds of green gooseberries,in fact I crave them!cream cake/ pork pie ? no brainer for me!😀
I suffer from ulcerative colitis which is under control from salofalk granules however I have to be careful about my diet- I don't tend to have sugary things or lots of carbs as they affect me and then I suffer. A change of food type -maybe an asian meal - gives me awful pains so its plain boring food for me! x Anita
This is an interesting post for me as I’m also a sugar addict. I’ve suffered from colitis in the past so I’ll take this report as a salutary warning to cut down. Apart from the inflammatory result in overindulging, it also wreaks havoc on the skin as well as the waistline.
Thanks for the post 2greys and I hope you’re doing well.
