I used to get leg cramp waking me up most nights, the pain so intense it prevented me getting out of bed to try to walk it off even. Not so bad, or often now, since eating a a daily banana, making sure I remain hydrated and drinking tonic water in the evenings, make sure it is not the cheap tonic water that has flavourings only, you need the one containing quinnine.

Hi i take one tablet of quinine sulphate 300mg nightly which have eliminated what were nightly leg cramps to great effect but be advised their usage is being restricted as some research has indicated possible onset of AF with people with a suspected heart condition.

I did get them prescribed, but they got stopped after 1 month, but I do have both Arrhythmia and Cardio Arterial Disease so I suppose the GP was being cautious, but there is more than one way to skin a cat, no offense intended to Scruffy.

I don't agree with their efficiency findings but enclosed within the article is a direct reference to possible heart issues,i believe the Americans have now even withdrawn them completely.

Bit of a generalisation by your GP but like most things that have an element of doubt or concern i imagined that would be their attitude but more useful feedback from them would have seen them giving you an alternative. :)

Hi LemonandLime123, taking quinine tablets made me feel sick, but the doc told me to drink tonic water containing quinine. I already eat two bananas per day but I try and drink a large glass of tonic every day. Don't buy the expensive stuff, just check the bottle for quinine, I buy my from one of the cheaper supermarkets, it works just fine. Take care Maximonkey

I take a magnesium and a potassium citrate supplement and they help me.I get all over cramps, big muscles and small muscles. Very painful and annoying, happens constantly through the day and night. I know it is the inhalers because if I don’t take the inhaler for even one day, no cramps. Only one brand that I got via samples from my GP didn’t produce the cramping and my insurance does not cover it (I’m in the US). So once those samples ran out, back on cramp inducing meds I went and back to the supplements.

I to suffered with cramps and found out mangnesium citrate worked for me and also helped my splitting nails. I don't take the 3a day just one in the evening after my meal I found was enough. Xxx

Yes I take those too,but be carefull if you are put on antibiotics as they need to be at least 2 hours apart at bedtime as one can cancel out the other.I have just found that out today from the doctor xx

My cramps are horrendous especially at night. I am on Fostair 100/6 and was changed to seratide but the cramps got even worse , in fact every time I moved. I changed back to the Fostair but it is not great and also has an effect on my teeth and gums. The things we put up with!

I had same problem with Fostair - terrible cramps at night - nurse changed me to Braltus - seems to work better but taking only once a day not sure that it lasts 24hrs - anyway no more cramps ....

Will mention braitus in my follow up at royal brompton in January. Is it a dry powder though because I don't get on with dry powder inhalers?

Albertdog profile image

Sorry - but yes it is a dry powder. I don't seem to suffer any noticeable side effects- but it seems to work as well for me as Fostair did. But at 83 my body does all sorts of funny things which i have learned to put up with ...hey ho....

I also get terrible leg and foot cramp and very sensitive gums . Have tried tonic water, bananas all sorts. Much worse after an 8 hour shift on my feet.!!!

I too am suffering taking Trimbow. Think it makes my shortness of breath worse and it certainly doesn’t “hold” symptoms all day til next dose. Yet again I’m on steroids😡. I keep getting told to persevere. I have pernicious anemia and celiac and they tell me I’m really sensitive to the ingredients in it . Have consulted gp, pharmacist and now respiratory team. They’re ringing back today so I might get some help 🤞

Hi, thanks for your response,

The areas that you are having these cramps sounds like a full bath of hot water or a warm towel over the areas straight to the skin. It is involves no medical involvement and can be done at your own convenience.

My cramps are limited at the moment to the hands but are extremely painful, a warm towel or even a hot water bottle helps. The cramps can go within minutes of this application, It's only awkward when out and about. keep those parts wrapped up. It could be the heat or the wool or even both. At least you have a little time to prepare, mine come on in an instant.

Good luck, I know this works, please give it a try.
