Interesting little article on the beeb,hardly a global scale experiment and i will make no comment on it's findings nor enter into debate about it but just thought it might be of interest.

Thank you skis, our grandkids travel by car as it’s too far to walk to school. I guessed the car would be the worst because of the polluted air that gets in and just hangs in the car. Not good. Xxxx
I think when we were younger the majority of children walked to schools which were much closer to home but of course we only had to worry about the smoke coming from people's houses as there wasn't much traffic about,i don't think yummy mummys in Chelsea tractors were very much in prevalence lol xxx

Yes i well remember those barefoot strolls with only a crust for lunch looking forward to a small bottle of free frozen milk in the school playground.times were hard . i feel a monty python sketch coming on really not in context with this serious subject lol xx

We live opposite a Junior school and watch them every day, they have to leave the engine running so they don't either get cold or too warm. They have absolutely NO interest in any sort of pollution.
Hello Pete,i promised i wouldn't debate the pros and cons of how people's children are transported to school but my brother also lives very close to a primary school and has voiced those very same comments and some people's selfishness when they do drop off and pick up their kids is a beggar to believe.

What was the outcome of the experiment?
Very little outcome i imagine as i assume like all things with air pollution there is no simple solution but at least we got a jolly good tune in the making of the report and it is quite bouncy,prizes will be awarded for who ever identifies the band well on the way to topping the charts lol x
oh sorry the outcome was that the people in the car suffered the most pollution.
Wonder how bad it is when traveling by bus. My grandaughter has 1 and a half journey each way. Goes all round the villages and her stop is the first one out and last one back. At only 11 got a few years of this. Worried how it could affect her lungs .

Maybe as you say they got to their destination quicker than the walkers thus taking in less external pollution. xx

Face masks might be a short term answer - other countries appear to think so . . . I have just started wearing them when cleaning which sadly I am not managing to do much of at the moment . . .
Coincidently dear majji i just bought one for cleaning also as i have mould that needs ridding but to be effective they need to be of a certain rating with specific filtering mine is Pr3d or something like that for use in decorating,those silly things you see the Japanese wearing don't appear to be filtering anything.boring world we live in when we have to wear masks to anything other than a fancy ball. lol xx
I just bought some from Amazon, Vipith Breathable Gauze which can supposedly defend one from the likes of King Kong and the dust in his fur. Have not yet had to don one though . . . .
I used to catch the bus or the train to school when I went to one that was too far to walk. Near where I live, there are two primary schools, one senior school and a further education college. It's deadly around school opening and closing times: loads of fumes and the roads blocked up for an hour. Have to arrange my life accordingly to avoid those times.
Maybe there should be drop off zones where parents could drop their kids off to catch one bus into school that could avoid some of the clog ups around schools often an inconvenience for near bye residents?
We've had a local consultation questionnaire from the district council which I completed, but nothing has happened. When petitions were posted on here to send to our MPs, I did, and put various ideas to improve the situation (traffic lights at each end of the road to ensure the school traffic doesn't wait 20 minutes trying to turn right onto the main road, enforcing no idling rules, sending traffic wardens to ticket drivers parked illegally, etc) but again, nothing seems to have changed. Lots of youngsters do walk and catch the bus on the main road, but the cars that still come and park up to wait are so big, only a little smart car like mine can get through. The ice cream van has to turn up over an hour early to get a space in the school layby.
