Just wondering ,!? I was talking to a man on my last visit to hospital ,he also had oxygen but I was saying to him that mine only lasted 3and half hrs ,he then started telling me about this little blue machine he puts in the front of his backpack he said it's bleeps and helps you Couse on resting instead of turning yr oxygen on and off but then my name got called and by the time I got back to the waiting room he'd gone but he did say to ask my nurse could anyone shed some light on this or were I could get 1 from plz

Well, first the time your cylinder lasts will depend on how high or low your prescription is, i.e. how many litres per minute you have.

But the gizmo he was referring to is probably a conserver which works by making the oxygen flow breath-activated, so you just get a quick puff of oxygen up your nose when you breathe in, unlike the continuous flow method where the oxygen is coming out all the time. The conserver makes a huge difference to how long your cylinder lasts but I was told it's often not suitable if you are a mouth breather. (I am a mouth breather when walking but it seems I still take in enough air though my nose to prompt the conserver to work.)

Thankyou yes now uv said it I remember it was what you just told me and I'm on 2 but sometimes I feel I need more IV tried telling my nurse but I don't thinks she believes me or my be it's because I get my self in a state sometimes , anxiety kicking in but thankyou x

You may feel you need more O2 as you are breathless, but O2 isnt given for breathlessness but for low levels of oxygen saturation in the blood. You could need a medication review or ask your nurse about doing a test to see if your O2 prescription is enough for your needs. If you're on ambulatory oxygen, the test would be a six minute walk test where your oxygen levels would be monitored.

Yes it is a conserver and it will make your oxygen bottle last double the time I have had one for many years now and makes a huge difference

My respiratory nurse spoke to me about a conserver but said it would not be advised for me as I have fibrosis, it also isn't advised for people with heart problems.
