My Great Grandfather was a miner. My Grandfather was the Reverend William Younger ( he can be found on Google ). Whereas my Great Grandfather was working class, My Grandfather William rose up the ranks, so to speak. In his day he was a very well known preacher and a primitive Methodist. I can remember as a very young child sitting on his lap and telling him the story of Peter Rabbit!
Very formal looking photograph and I wonder if uncle Vernon was rebuked for almost smiling? Your father obviously knew it would be frowned upon and towed the party line. 😊😺
If you look carefully, you will see at the bottom of the photo that it was taken by the photographer to her late Majesty Queen Victoria. Vernon went on to become a town clerk whereas my father became a chartered accountant. William was quite a strict man from memory, as was my Father.
That made me chuckle. He was the official photographer to Queen Victoria. My Father carried on the tradition of not spending often, but buying the best when he did!
It is a seriously impressive photo and i imagine took pride of place somewhere within the family home but i can't help but itch when i see the cumbersome clothing the children were made to wear. my cotton weaving family oop north probably had grubby clothes to go with their grubby faces but were probably a little more comfortable.
We have to know the past, if we do not, how do we stop making the same mistakes. Love the clothes, have some in some old albums, not sure where they are. Still have my Grandparents ration cards from the First World War, my Dad had kept then and taken them round the world with him.
They all look so smart in their best clothes for the photo. How lovely that you have this to remember your father as a little boy.
Beautiful photograph. People had such style in those days. You should see the one of my great grandmother. She hangs in a prominent place in my room and her eyes seem to follow me. Her story is extraordinary and she definitely makes me feel a bit guilty even though I've done nothing wrong.....it's the eyes. 👀😂😂😂
Great photo! Love the outfits. I wonder if they were the children's own clothes or photographer's props, but from your previous answers it sounds as though they were their own. I'm glad I wasn't a child back then. I agree with Skiis about the itch factor! xx Moy
Lovely photo. We are so lucky that photography had progressed to the stage were we are left with good quality family photos of our grandparents dating back to the late 1800's. I've been left a lot from my family who were also strict Methodists which makes me wonder whether their religion had anything to do with their enthusiasm for photography .
