There are so many of us who are in that situation Don. As usual you have used your gift to put our feelings into rhyme. Gone are the days when there was an odd job man who could help out with those little jobs.
I heard of a site where ex-policemen do odd jobs for you. So I contacted them about some fencing work. Surprise, surprise, the chap didn't turn up as promised. That was some time ago and he phoned me last week apologising.
Now I know that some ladies on here have sons in the police forces so I don't want to say any more on the matter .🤐 trustinblue.com
Hello, hello, hello, that wasn’t very good just not turning up.
I don’t know about any ladies but I have a son who’s a police officer. 😘 I wouldn’t do his job for all the tea in China and I do like my tea. Lol. Xxxx 😀💖😘
Hope your Son keeps safe. All respect for the Police. And Emergency services has nearly gone. Sentences need to be treble for Attacking Emergency Services. Plus hard labour to stop making jail so cushy. They are better looked after than us . Hope you both have a good day.. BRIAN
You put it down so well Don, all these little jobs that we can no longer do make you very frustrated. Can just see Midge begging somebody to do a little job for him, mmm, perhaps I will rephrase that to read, a little work for him lol x
That is so true Mr Don! My handiman died in May. Its a struggle without him! I hire a kid from the street to do the little chores,I can no longer do!He loves it when I give him $5.00 to reset things around here that are computerized! I have no clue! Beautiful poem! Janet127
Over here the Boy Scouts used to have 'Bob-a-job' weeks and I used to get them doing jobs which I either didn't need doing or I could easily do myself (It was for charity). Where are they now when I need them? The kids around here are too wealthy, I doubt I could afford them if they got off their backsides anyway. Mr.Grumpy & Midge xx
Pay ,yes you expect to do that. For more than two weeks i couldnt find anyone to carry my dead microwave downstairs from my kitchen to take it to local tip. Business advertising any job yes ,at a price £250 minimum charge ,or another at £79 min charge and pay per item. Even then not interested. No one interested . Eventually i did find someone who lived nearby with a minimum charge of £35 but this lovely man not only reduced this to £20, he showed compassion ( and took his shoes off to save marking my carpet)
Too many new houses round here now and not enough workers to do the work . Difficult especially when you have been independent and fit enough to do all these things yourself. I carried that microwave up stairs 8 years ago but now i cannot lift it off the floor.
Had the same trouble getting the new one delivered . DPD are" not insured to cross your doorstep " and actually took it back when i would only sign for it when it was up stairs in the kitchen as requested.!
I am surprised your local council doesn't have the service of taking items away for a small fee. This costs around £14 for the first item and £4 per additional one. They will even (by arrangement) take it from your home. x
Oh so true, I have so many little jobs that need doing you can't get an odd job man these days.....they've all disappeared....even my gardener is not very reliable can't guarantee these days he'll turn up to cut the lawn, never mind the extra jobs I'd like him to do in the garden. !!!!
Last year i was quoted £60 to change a light bulb so i changed electricity company to UtilityWarehouse who replaced all bulbs with leds that last and last, supply new ones if they do go. Unfortunately they only post those but the first ones were installed by them in a visit by a fully equipped van. About 20-k25 bulbs in all. So when those go if iam still here then i will be sitting in the dark too
Have you asked your local council? Here there is a “minor jobs” service for the elderly. My mother has used it for things like new smoke alarm batteries, replacing light bulbs (she has very high ceilings), new hinges on a saggy cupboard etc. I think it costs £5 per visit and it’s retired tradesmen who do it.
That’s a thought thank you. Saggy cupboards 🤣 I’ve got those but never heard them called that before. I must start looking around the little jobs are pilling up.😕
