Can anyone tell what kind of bird this is, please? It’s been hanging around my patio area for a couple of days now. This morning I saw it being attacked on the lawn by a big fat wood pigeon. It survived but doesn’t look very happy. Thanks to Midge my garden is a cat free zone. Just wondering if I can do anything to help the little blighter. 🤔

Afternoon Mr.D and that's made me 😃 smile .... You with a bird loitering in your garden !!! At least the bird has a classy bit of garden furniture to sit on and solar lights for the night time 😂😂😂. As per blooming usual,I can be of no help whatsoever but I do have a question for you .... What happened to your post yesterday,as it won't let me read it!!!
Anyway back to your bird - as she/he is a stayover,have you titled him/her a name yet?

It could be a Stock Dove Cap'n -grey rump, no white on wings, nests in holes in trees or on rock faces - seen feeding on the ground often with woodpigeons - very slight pinkish tinge to breast? That's according to my Spotters Handbook - or even a juvenile woodpigeon . . . .

I reckoned a juvenile wood pigeon but wondered why an adult would attack it in that way. Then I membered my days of fathering an unruly teenager. 🙄
Looks like a a young Ring Neck Dove to me. Mine are very friendly, over hover round my window and door when they want feeding also trying to build another nest on old internet dish over door, with no success bless.
Without seeing it face on, it does look rather like a fledgling wood pigeon.
I can be certain that it is not an African Grey though

If it was an African Grey I’d be able to ask it for an explanation and would expect a reply. 😅
Just make sure it has access to water and nibbles Master Po and hopefully it will regain it's stamina and fly off to pastures new. :)x

You’re right, I’ve always believed in letting Mother Nature sort out her own problems. (But I don’t like bullies.)
Looks like some kind of pigeon. Looked at my bird book and it could be stock dove. This book says smaller than wood pigeon ,all grey with dark eyes and greenish metallic sheen on side of neck, and female has brownish tone on back. Eats berries seeds and green plants. Very basic book !Have another look.
Do you feed the birds generally? I get a great deal of pleasure watching the smaller birds come to that come to bird feeders . At present some are on their second brood and carry away my homemade lard and seed bread mixture. My days of birdwatching trips are over so bring the birds to me outside my window.

No I don’t feed the birds anymore, I stopped because of the great numbers of wood pigeons that invaded, together with starling, magpies and other bigger birds which drove the small ones away. My neighbours are keen gardeners too who are not keen on birds, though they have never said that to me.
What I can’t understand is why a wood pigeon, a big fat self-satisfied plutocrat of a bird should attack this much smaller bird.
It's looks like the doves l get in my back garden. Possibly a juvenile if it's been hanging about!
Hi Don The Bird Man,Had Hubby to look at your Bird here, he is trying to rack his B. Brain as he knows of it? I have all the Big Birds Lining up every Morning at 8am for the Feed we put out, which you are correct, the Little Birds are in fear of the Bigger Ones, I dislike Magpies, They have Murdered two Baby wood Pigeon Chicks last week in my Garden, stealing them from their nest, in a huge Tree, they are Cannibals. I have been putting feed near to my Hedges so the little ones can get near to eat. We even moved the Bird Feeder next to the hedge. Mind, My Princess gets a good bit of exercise, she loves chasing the Pigeons. Might try that Myself... XXXX

Hi Don, I reckon its a baby wood pigeon that has been naughty and chastised, but like you I dont like bullies so always try to help, it will be ok. Im sure by now it has flown off x

It looks like a fat pigeon, and that’s pretty much the extent of my ornithological knowledge. But what a great garden you have 👍
My partner thinks it is a young pigeon, and the one attacking it could have been a parent trying to get it to move? Give it some fresh water and birdseed.
I asked an ornithologist friend who said it is a young woodpigeon. They don't have the white mark on the neck at first, until they moult their body feathers, which is why it looks a bit different from an adult. 🐦

Did your friend have any idea why an adult would attack it? It looked a very vicious encounter with the big one holding the smaller one by the neck. Mind you once it let it go the little one chased the other off and seemed unfazed by the event. Usually if there’s a dispute between birds it’s over in seconds but this went on for some time. Never seen the likes of it before.

Didnt know that about the young bird. The more I learn the more I am confused but I do have a long -standing aversion to pigeons !!

Feral pigeons so do I, but a next-door-but-one neighbour used to keep homing pigeons which I used to find quite interesting. Woodpigeon different are and are very tasty too.
It looks like what we get in our garden in New Zealand. They are a type of pigeon. They are very Matty and have partners that they keep with all their lives. They get very sad and sorry if they loose their mate.
Not a lot you can do Don. Put some water on the table and some seeds.
Or cooked rice. It may Buck it up with other birds coming on the table.
Maybe a young turtle dove
I’m pretty sure now that it was a young wood pigeon getting good hiding from one of it’s parents.
