What is your condition? Have you had a diagnosis and why do you feel you need to increase your lung capacity? Those with obstructive lung diseases usually have enlarged lungs whereas those with a restricted lung disease, for instance, pulmonary fibrosis, have reduced lung capacity. Perhaps you could tell us a little more?

I have had bronchitis several times in the past and have bronchetesis and feel out of breath if talking and walking.

Increasing your lung capacity may not be appropriate for your condition. But there certainly are breathing techniques that would help you. Ask your doctor for a referral to a respiratory physiotherapist. Most of us here are breathless when we exercise or talk. We just have to learn to cope with it and pace ourselves which is much easier said than done! Pulmonary rehab is another possibility. Your GP can refer you for that.

Thank you. I was hoping to avoid going to our GP because it is always so hard to get an appointment.

Gp as suggested is best, I do know people who have benefitted from singing, whether it is joining a choir, or in the bath. My mothers answer to a child (me) with asthma, was to buy a second hand clarinet, and make me take lessons for years, think it helped, drove the few neighbours we had over the years potty!!

Ha Ha you have helped me already with the laugh about your Mother’s answer! Snag for me is, at 71 I doubt I would have enough puff for any note! 😊 I guess I am just going to have to sit on the phone, dial and redial until I get to talk to someone! I kid you not, I will be lucky if the call is answered within an hour, then I get told I am in a queue

Check out the singing for lung health groups listed on the BLF website - there may be one near you. The one I run in south Cheshire teaches diaphragm breathing techniques but doesn't expect people to be able to sing well, just join in and have a go.
