Hello thamesbob, you may well have a chest infection but the doctor should be requesting a sputum sample to find out the correct antibiotic to use. I’d go back and speak to your GP as you’re not feeling better.
Good luck to you. Xxxx
Well a full course of amoxicillin is usually 7 days minimum and you should complete those and see how you are then. If no better go back to the doc who I would expect to give you a further course of Amoxicillin or change to Doxycycline with Prednisoline 5mg. If he doesn't ask him why cos your mate said he would. 😉
Yes..whenever I have a infection my Doc gives me at least a 7 or 10 even 20 day supply of Antibiotics! Sometimes I go back 5 times and get them! It takes me a long time to feel better as my immune system is low. Sometimes I also get Steroids if I need to clean my house! LOL I read drink pineapple juice to breathe better! Hope you feel better! Amoxicillin is not very good in COPD patients for a chest infection I am surprised you were not given Doxycycline and Prednisolone see your GP again
Hi ginger music I had a bad chest infection and although I have Doxycycline and Prednisolone for my rescue pack my gp gave me strong Amoxcillin which really worked and got rid of the infection. I think it depends on the severity of the infection because my usual antibiotics in my rescue pack weren’t strong enough this time. Pauline
I would get a second opinion off another doctor. I was lucky my doctor sent me for tests and i did have COPD.
Hope you get it sorted
Insist on a referal to a COPD consultant, GP's are useless for us as they know little about our problems, you could always go to A & E
Good luck
Hi thamesbob I hope you’re starting to feel a little bit better but a 5 day course of those antibiotics doesn’t seem to me like long enough at all . When I first started to need antibiotics that’s what I would get 5 days also a 5 days of steroids, that seem like such a long time ago. I was told by a couple of different drs on different occasions that I had crackling noise coming from my lungs and this was in the emergency department a couple of times I was sent for a ct scan a few times, anyway it turned it to be pneumonia and like you at different times it was a bad chest infection that needed high dosage of doxycycline and steroids. If you’re mentioned it could be your heart please please go back this week and ask them to send you to get your heart checked ♥️ If there’s no problems with it then that’s great your Not wasting anyone’s time but if your heart is ok it’s something that you don’t need to worry about. I don’t think it was very fare that your dr just said it could be heart failure without a good explanation of why he thought that and what the nxt step would be, in my opinion he should have organised some tests . I’m sorry to hear your feeling so unwell my heart goes out to you. Please keep us updated on how your doing and what you’re dr is doing for you. I’ll keep you in my prayers 🙏 I hope you get an answer quickly all the best and take care 🌹🌹
Hi thamesbob
I would say as the others are saying... insist on full check for chest infection.
A few months ago I went to the doctors, my chest was getting tighter and I had a silly cough. Doctor said, can't hear anything, no infection take paracetamol.... A week later went to see another doctor. Still couldn't hear anything but she said, it's your body and if you feel it then we'll go with that.
in my case she prescribed:
Amoxicillin and Prednisoline.
After about 48 hours I was bringing up thick dark brown phlegm, a week later and my chest is back to it's 'copd normal self'..... "Thanks Doc"
I did a bit of on-line research into the silly copd cough I had and found that 'n-acetyl cysteine' could be of benifit.
I have since started staking the one 600mg tablet a day and my silly copd cough now produces clear phlegm every couple of days, leaving my chest feeling so much looser than before.
I've not had an infection since. This would be nothing to do with taking the 'n-acetyl cysteine', an infection is an infection and comes when it wants.
I'm not recommending it, that would be wrong.. but it helps me.
best wishes ccww
Hi Bob, I too have had chest infections & been given Amoxicillin & Prednisone but was refused by a doctor once which then turned too Pleurisy as coughing too much will result in this as had it 3 times now. Also Iv been given Doxycycline as Amoxicillin didn’t work with the Pleurisy. Hope I’m some help & hope you get rid of your cough & infection 👍🏽
