Hi Elizabeth, a nippy is just another name for a CPAP or BiPAP machine, I’ve been using a BiPAP machine every night for a year now, because of Type II Respiratory Failure, I’m also on oxygen 15 hours a day, I use BiPAP because without it I would suffer from oxygen retention.

The BiPAP machine has given me my life back, if you have to use CPAP or BiPAP don’t be afraid, it can be daunting at first, but when you get the right mask and fitting you won’t look back, I alternate between the ResMed AirTouch F20 and the Philips Respironics DreamWear Full Face mask, both are excellent masks, but the DreamWear is not like wearing a Full Face mask, it sits under your nose and over your mouth.

Just make sure you don’t over tighten either mask, because ironically it makes mask leaks worse.

Good luck with your Nippy, believe me it will change your life for the better.

Best wishes Ian.

Hi

I have just been given one of these machines and I am really struggling with it. I was first given a full mask but couldn’t wear it as it made me very claustrophobic and I was scared the way the control of my breathing was taken away. The have now tried me with a mask that sits under my nose with the pipe coming out at the top of my head. This is much more comfortable to wear and I have managed to build up the time wearing it to three and a bit hours but every time I fall asleep the machine makes me “bubble” through my mouth and it wakes me up because my breathing seems out of sync. My husband thinks it’s because as soon as I fall asleep my mouth drops open! Not sure what to do. You say its given you your life back - in what way? I’m not sure I can keep going with it. Jackie

Hi Jackie.

Without using BiPAP i was on oxygen 24/7. 1 litre at rest and 2 litres on ambulatory, I couldn't do any exercise, because my oxygen levels dropped dangerously low, if I put oxygen up above 2 litres I would be in danger of oxygen retention and I would become gravely ill.

Since I've been using BiPAP I have had my oxygen usage cut to 15 hours a day at 1 litre at rest and between 2 and 5 litres for walking and exercising, I have also managed to complete a ten week course of Pulmonary Rehabilitation, which I now do twice a week at home.

It sounds like you have either been given the Philips Respironics DreamWear Full Face mask or the Philips Respironics DreamWear Nasal mask, if your mouth is opening when your sleeping I would recommend either a chin strap or this hope2sleep.co.uk/neck-cushi..., I have used both, but I prefer Dr Dakota support.

I can now sleep 8 hours and no longer wake up tired because oxygen retention.

Good luck and Best wishes Ian.

Thank you so much for your reply - I too am on oxygen 15 hours 1 litre at rest and 5-6 litres on mobility and suffer from co2 retention but have a small portable flask that I wear as a backpack so up TIL recently have been able to walk and do exercise with this. However lately I am struggling to actually do anything so not sure what’s going on. After reading your positive post I will try to get a strap and try to persevere.

Thank you
