Are you in UK if so your employer should be paying you statutory sick pay. They also have an obligation to at least consider less demanding work. Acas are good on this. All the best. horrible situation to be in

They are starting to tighten up on a lot of benefits here in New Zealand too, but, it is still a lot cheaper & more peaceful to pay benfits or the beneficiary will turn to crime. You must be able to get some sort of benefit there surely!!

If you are in the U.K. and you have worked for the employer for the stipulated period and have earned sufficient average earnings over the qualifying period then you are entitled to 28 weeks SSP. You certify yourself as unfit to work for the first week of illness and from then on you need a doctors certificate. I know this sounds complicated but the powers that be like contorted rules! If you meet the criteria then your employer should be paying you SSP.

As long as you get a sick note to the employer, they can then book for you to get SSP. Ask them if they are organizing that. Of course, it's a fraction of normal sick pay but ...

p.s. Remember that an inhaled steroid can make you feel lethargic, which makes it harder for you to judge whether or not you are ready to work again. e.g. Budesonide can make you feel very wiped out, and you keep falling back even after making an effort to get simple things done, even things you normally do for fun.
