I was diagnosed with copd last month I'm just in the middle of my first chest infection since being diagnosed. I was given amoxycillan 500 mg nd prednisolone 5mg I have one day left of my course and still feel terrible
Do I need to go back to doctors - Lung Conditions C...
Do I need to go back to doctors
Absolutely, go back. Amoxicillin has never ever worked for me in 10 years of having poor lung health, they still try to give it to me and every single time I have to remind them it won't work. They can at least give you another 7 day course of Amox but preferably amoxiclav which is amoxicillin plus another antibiotic. If you're still in the same situation in another week you must go back again. Really, they should take a sample of your sputum to test for the correct antibiotic to use against your bugs - there are many.
If you're new to all this please do keep coming back for advice, it's hard at times to know when to seek help or not.
Good luck and get well soon. P
Thank you for your quick response...I have been too hospital a few times with breathlessness with my chest infection and each time I was on amoxycillan and they gave me doxycyclineither which seemed to work much better x
Bloody predictive text....sorry doxycycline* x
That's quite a good one although recently I was prescribed a 7 day course of doxy which didn't clear infection so had to have a second course. I believe many members are given a 10 day course of their antibiotic. Hoping you see a GP today to have your lungs listened to - and have you had flu and pneumonia vaccinations?
Hi Llegkt1 .
Those horrid infections 😡 , they do tend to cling on like a dog with a bone. And can take ages to clear up. I'd say go back to the doctor's just to be safe. I hope you feel better very soon.
Take good care,

Yes, go back. You probably need a longer course ( I have 10 days) or a different antibiotic. Hope you feel better soon.
I would go back and ask for a sputum specimen to be sent. Amoxicillin is a great antibiotic but it as limitations. I normally find a longer course of antibiotics is required to completely get the infection under control.
Sometimes it can take few antibiotics before you fell any benift from them. But if in any doubt. Go back and see gp. Hope you felling better soon. Love form scotalnd
I have amoxycillin 500 and prednisolone as emergency packs at home. But if it is a bad infection, I often have to back to get a stronger antibiotic and another course of pred. If you still feel no better at all I would go and see a GP asap. My GPs are very good and will see me same day as an emergency because of my heart and lung problems
Thank you everyone the doctor extended my antibiotics and give me a seebri inhaler...are they any good?
Many thanks x

Hi if you already have a chest infection go back & see your GP urgently. I've found amoxicillin fairly useless over many years but the GP's start you on that antibiotic because it is wide ranging for diseases. the best for me is clarithromycin 500 g tablets plus the steroid Prednisalone 6/8 Tablets daily. Suggest to your GP that you give Clarithromycin a go.
