"...A review of molecular and animal experiments showed that vitamin D regulates airway contraction, inflammation, and remodeling in airway smooth muscles characteristic of COPD (Banerjee 2012). A cross-sectional study found that higher plasma levels of vitamin D are associated with increased bone mineral density and exercise capacity in people with COPD (Romme 2012). Evidence also showed that high dose vitamin D supplementation improved respiratory muscle strength and exercise capacity in people with COPD (Hornikx 2011)..."

A few here take a high dose of Vit. D3, inc. myself. I take 1000 micrograms (4000 international units) of D3 alongside 1500 micrograms of Vit. K2 [mk7] daily, since November last year. The Vit. K2 helps prevent the D3 going to the fatty tissues in our organs and blood vessels enabling it to all be available to be taken up by the bones.
Does it make any difference? Very hard to say, I did get one infection at the end of last December, only six weeks from starting to take them, but none since. My energy levels are very high still able to work a 44 hour week despite my FEV1 having dropped to 31% and suffered almost no fatigue from radiotherapy and still able to go to work throughout the treatment. I have not had an ill effects from taking D3 & K2. My GP thought it a high dose, but safe to take. I continue to take them.
All I can find here in the States is 30 count bottles of 100 mcg. ea.; I guess I'd have to take 15 individual caps to get to your level. I may forego the K2 and just concentrate on the D3 which I can find from 2000 iu to 10,000 iu.
I only take 2 caps per day. The D3 & K2 are combined together in the caps. When I get home I will send you details, they can be bought online and mailed.
I have arthritis and osteoporosis and bronchiectasis. I take 1000iu of vit d3 one tablet a day. I have fairly poor appetite, losing a bit of weight lately, just over 8 stone, and low energy. Interested in this combined pill you mention, with K2' if you can pass on details would appreciate it.
There are two links in this series of messages to places to get the vitamins: one for the Englishers and one for us Norte Americanos...; read through all the messages for more info and the links.
bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-240... thanks, I would speak to my doctor about it but I really do not think it is necessary unless advised by a doctor and they should then actually offer a prescription for it. Vitamins are available from GP's Iron and Vitamin D etc but only if a need is there and it is urgent enough for this to be prescribed. I get Vitamin D by the doctor. My advice to all is consult your GP or specialist nurse and doctors, do not take advice to go and get a supplement at the local supplement shop. Clots are dangerous too as dangerous as bleeding disorders.
Three years ago after a wretched winter of colds, pneumonia and an empyema it was found that I was very low in vit D. After five weeks of 20,000 iu three times per week I went on to 1600 per day. Since then I have had one cold, one chest virus and a very mild flu when on a cruise where everybody else dropped like flies. In addition, I know it’s a funny thing to say but I feel more robust and have a better appetite. There definitely does seem to be a link between all lung conditions and and an inability to absorb vit D from food or the sun.
Docs here in the States seem to not have a lot of faith in most (not all) vitamins as health maintenance tools; I hardly ever hear one suggest a particular vitamin besides "C" or, perhaps, B complex, but other than that, nothing. I seem to remember Vit. K being part of CoQ10 as well.
I had x-ray showed I had developed ostherarthtis so now take one tablet weekly which I have to take sat up or stood up no food for 30 minutes. Then 2 vitamin D tablets and another 2 at night. I have started to feel better in myself more energy.and less chest infections and i do have a chest infection it's very mild. So pleased that they seem to be something
Both my wife and I take vit D 1000iu daily. From talking to both my dietian and GP, in the UK vitamin D deficiency is rife. Some research would suggest that 50% of the population have a deficiency. Mostly due to the weather and diet. I do not take it for my COPD as such but for aches and pains of a musculoskeletal type. I do have osteoarthritis and the first test my GP carried out was Vitamin D levels which proved to be low.
My husband who has severe emphysema was tested and found to be low in vitamin D and was prescribed 2 capsules to be taken only once a month for 3 months.
Must be very high dose but quick and I hope effective.
I've also heard of non COPD persons prescribed them too.
