Consultant day

So finally getting to meet Consultant today, have only seen Registrars since being diagnosed with Bronchiectasis last year after Haemophilis bug did some colonising. Hoping can get some info on how to proceed from here after 3 months of being on and off Doxycycline. Even though sputum results came back clear seems like as soon as stop the antib's within a day or so feel like got nasty flu with awful pleuritic chest pain and mouth ulcers. Keeping fingers crossed

Thank you :)

Hi shouty, when I go to clinic I ask the nurses to put my file on the consultants pile and sit there until she sees me. I have been messed about by too many registrars in my 65 years of bronch.

I hope that the consultant puts you on long term azithromycin and tests to see if you have some other bug in there.

Take your list of questions and remember, you pay these people’s wages and they are there to use their very expensive training to help you. Don’t be overawed by them.

Don’t forget that even when the abs have been doing their work you need to work very hard every day to empty your lungs of all fluid that any lurking bugs will breed in. It’s boring, it’s tiring but it’s essential

Good luck, I hope that the consultant comes up with a plan.

Consultant really nice & chased up the sample I gave last week & yep Haemophilis is back. Going back in Doxy for 3 months one every other day then to add Amoxil in not feeling any imorovement in a week or so. Said what I already knew that H'phis a bugger to get rid of but having done the same last year fingers crossed can eradicate it in time for winter. Was surprised when he said he'll see me again in clinic in 2 months after hassle of getting yesterdays appointment. Proud that I managed a 460 peak flow though😏

Hi Shouty, As LP said ask for Azithromycin, it is the best AntiB and has kept Bugs away from me since taking them 3 X weekly. I didn't react too well to "Doxy" I have Amoxyclav which worked when I had to use Rescue Meds last Year. Good Luck Hun. xxx

Are mouth ulcers part of the condition? I get loads but have been blaming it on my ulcerative colitis.

I don't think its the Bronchiectasis itself. I always get them when run down or starting with Haemophilus again. Ironically one of the side effects of Doxycycline is mouth ulcers or white patches on your tongue Sod's Law i guess. Might be worth mentioning it to yoyr Doctor

Good luck shouty, I have been in your shoes and know how you feel. I hope the consultant has something positive to tell you. He may prescribe Azithromycin 3 days per week. I have had a really positive reaction to Azith and they have given me my life back. I hope you too are as lucky. Take care, Maximonkey

Thank you at least this time the chest pains are not as bad. Last year thought I'd got Pleurisy this was before they found the Haemophilis and CT scan diagnosed the Bronchiectasis. Never found the cause though. Glad to hear your life is easier now :)
