Carbocistene

juney_99_antique profile image

I take carbocistine 2 tabs three times a day but over the past few months it has become very ineffective. Could it be because my chemist shops around for the cheapest version of the drug? I have questioned him about this but he says there is no difference in the content! Could the chemist be wrong about this? Thank you in advance for any replies!

Hi juney_99_antique .

Do you mean generic when you say "cheaper version"? Just making sure. 😀

Hi, I have myself noticed a difference between the generic drugs. As has both my son's. We all have different ailments. Not all generics are poor. Take a note of manufacturer on the box. And then you can tell pharmacist that one is not working for you. If he is going to be difficult, then tell him you will have to go else are with your prescription. Good luck and hope you get it sorted soon. Pat xxx

Thanks Pat. Have mentioned to chemist but he tells me that they all have the same content as the other just cheaper. May have to change chemist though! Thanks again!

Yes, should have said generic! Just don't seem as effective as they were! The original one was in a green casing and worked well. The generic ones are all in orange (in varying shades of orange) and don't appear to work. Maybe I'm just reading into things that are not there!

Well, if you feel something isn't right it probably isn't. It's important that you are comfortable with the meds you take. As Tilantoe said you can go elsewhere if he can't provide the non-generic version. xx 🙋

Thanks, Caspiana! I think it is gut instinct that there's something not right! Will call in chemist tomorrow and have another word! You are so helpful on here! Thank goodness you are all around!

Hi,

A lot is down to what your GP puts on the prescription, if he puts Mucodyne then that is what the chemist must supply, if the GP puts Carbocisteine then they can supply the generic type of the drug.

You don't necessarily have to have the original which I think was called mucodyn. But you don't want the one that's not working for you. They may have same ingredients but it's how they are put to gether and what they are mixed with.

Hi, I take carrbocistine each day and 2No things have happened, I have little mucus but what I do have is a problem getting up and often takes numerous coughing bouts.

The mucus seems to be getting less, the chest doesn't feel as tight so I wonder if I need to carry on taking them, I will discuss with my GP.

Suggest you too consult your GP , you could also try a small widget from clement-clarke.com, it requires you to "huff" into it, and/or an acapello machine which also requires "huffing" both are designed to move the mucus so you can cough it up and away

Thanks ikeith, I use a "flutter" device on getting out of bed, again at around 1 and again before bed and that works better than carbocistene! I will be calling at chemist this pm to see what is going on and have now decided to make appt with respiratory nurse at hospital! Thank you so much for your input though. Like everyone here you are all so helpful!

Hi there, i take mucodyne and found that after the first lot the chemist changes this to another cheaper one that didnt work for me, they wouldnt change this when I asked so went back to my doctor asking her to state mucodyne on the prescription and now only have this one. You can also request an acapella device which I find very useful if I dont have alot of mucus. X

Just keep on fighting, its the only way to get what you need and I dont care what they say, the cheaper alternatives are never as good. Irene x
