Asbestos & Social Landlord Duty

Well today I was in my garden and empty house 🏠 few doors up I could hear load of banging and snapping comeing from empty house garden.

And to my shock when I seen what contractor’s housing group was doing THEY was removing asbestos roof from garage.

2 young fellas and one older one CLEARLY older one should of known better.

As the was in garage hitting asbestos roofing sheets that was over the heads

As to protective gear JUST a T shirt with housing groups name.

Totally shocking especially from a local social housing trust.

Anyway THINGs was videod and informed H&S executive office re reckless asbestos removal by those that should no better.

They can be heavily fined for doing that Jeff. It is illegal and the housing ass would have known that they should employ specialised removers. Shop them!

Hi littlepom was shocking really guys doing it had nout In way of masks eye 👁 protection AND your right social landlord would of known risk.

I would not mind but it was all taken away in open skip.

But I did report to H&S people just hope action is taken

I would tell the environment people and building regs at your council. To avoid paying for proper removal they have put the whole area at risk. My son’s just had to pay a lot of money to have an old garage with an asbestos roof taken away. It was quite a performance.

That’s terrible JAS! Removing asbestos has to be done properly by experts wearing the appropriate gear. Glad you’ve reported them. Xxx

Well done Private Eye JAS! I bet you nearly fell to the floor in total,utter shock when you saw these men hacking away at the lethal asbestos!Good for you reporting the matter. A question though....are there more of such like garages that need to be addressed? Thank goodness you are so vigilant.

Unlike AIB asbestos insulation board, where you have to give 14days notice to HSE for approval and as to be carried by a Approved removal company.AC asbestos cement can be removed by any competent person including yourself. Many transfer station have asbestos skips for public use.

If it’s done by a company (two men and a van) they have to the correct waste carries license. ( there’s more than a good chance that the waste will end up on some school playing field or beauty spot.). ( I have spent many a Monday and Tuesday clearing up such fly tips.)

The situation you have observed, they should be wearing PPE personal protective equipment. The skip should be lockable ( the skip driver should not even lift the skip if it’s a open top skip) he’s the person responsible for the load, a net or plastic sheet covering is not acceptable.

The method of detachment can be bolt croppers, grinding disc, or hammer, keeping breakage down to minimum.

They also need washing facilities. (Hot water)

Well done Jeff, some asbestos can be removed without specialist, but I like you would expect it to be done professionally by a housing group, they are putting their workers at ri as well as the public.
