can I ask was it easy to get a home assessment done? Can you say any more about what your assessment entailed? Were you asked to do anything? I think I will have to do my changeover soon. Just waiting for the dreaded brown envelope to arrive!! And congratulations x

Hi Jimmyg23, that's great news, I'm so pleased for you 😁. I know how awful it is to go thru the PIP application😰

Do you mind my asking whether you were on the same rates when you were on DLA?

I'm still waiting for my home assessment, they cancelled on me and currently don't have anyone in my area to do home assessments. My health is worse than it's ever been and I had been awarded DLA at the highest rate for both sections indefinitely in 2000 because my condition is progressive. It seems that "indefinitely" means nothing as far as the PIP application is concerned however!

It's horrible having this hanging over my head, I'm afraid to spend any money on much needed jobs around my home, like making my small garden safe for me to get about in, as I have no idea if I will get the PIP and if I don't get it, I won't be able to afford my carers, let alone have any work done. 😵, Claire

jimmyg23 profile image
jimmyg23 in reply toleakeadea

iwas middle rate for living and high rate for mobility when on dla so better of now on pip

starskyd profile image
starskyd in reply tojimmyg23

leakeadea. I will cross everything for you. I have several medical issues none if which will disappear medication helps at times. I take 19 pills a day but was considered not ill enough!!! 13 mths down the line no money...still awaiting a tribunal date 8 mths later. Really hope you get what you are entitled to but i have totally lost faith.

leakeadea profile image
leakeadea in reply tostarskyd

I'm so sorry for what you're being put through, don't give up tho because that's what they want you to do. I had a local charity fill in my form for me as I can't write more than a couple of lines then my hand freezes up and I can't hold the pen. They were really brilliant and helped to lesson the stress. You could ask your local citizens advice for support or write to your local mp. What ever you do keep pushing for what you know you're entitled to.

starskyd profile image
starskyd in reply toleakeadea

Thanks. I have written to my mp who has drafted a letter for tribunal. It is very stressful playing the waiting game. 13 mths no money, and approx 9 mths just to get tribunal date, then another wait for hearing. My main grievance is working for 33 yrs+, a lot of that as single parent but never clained anything,.

leakeadea profile image
leakeadea in reply tostarskyd

It's just ridiculous, I cannot believe you are being put through this!

Like you say you have worked all your life, paid your taxes and National Insurance etc, then when you actually do become unwell and can't work, you're denied the benefits you should be entitled to! It's appalling 😤

Were you on DLA before or is this your first application for PIP?

I recently read online that the PIP are in trouble once again because they have been interpreting the wording of several questions incorrectly. Because of this it will cost an absolute fortune, as so many people now have to be reassessed.

I was told that for every person who was previously on DLA but then are not awarded PIP in its place, the assessors get paid a commission!

Apparently the government wants 25% of those on DLA, not to be awarded PIP. 😮

starskyd profile image
starskyd in reply toleakeadea

No this is the 2nd time im goibg through tribunal. I was turned down but my rep got me basic byt nothing for mobility... They wudnt give me ESA either because i wasnt actively seeking work even though i cant...crazy

leakeadea profile image
leakeadea in reply tostarskyd

These new benefits are so absurd and not fit for purpose.

I went through ESA last year and then PIP this year and the stress has been horrendous. There have been times when I've felt suicidal because I won't be able to keep a roof over my head, let alone pay for my carers, if I don't get moved from DLA to PIP at the same rates I've been on for the past 18 years. I'm sicker than I've ever been and for the past two years my only trips out of the house have been in an ambulance to hospital, or when my carer takes me to the INR clinic at my GPs. No one wants to be disabled or unwell and it feels like we're being punished for becoming sick.

starskyd profile image
starskyd in reply toleakeadea

Thats how I feel. Being punished for being ill. They dont think about that. I have complete meltdowns some day. Just the stress of waiting.

leakeadea profile image
leakeadea in reply tostarskyd

Me too, we are left living in fear every day and this alone will be having a very detrimental effect on our health conditions🤒

starskyd profile image
starskyd in reply toleakeadea

Thats why so many suicides!!

leakeadea profile image
leakeadea in reply tostarskyd

I know this may sound a bit drastic but it would appear that by targeting the sick and disabled, they have another way of social cleansing! I honestly don't know how members of this government sleep at night!

starskyd profile image
starskyd in reply toleakeadea

exactly.. they earn a fortune, private health care... what makes it worse is the fact if on benefits or claiming must be a scrounger.

jimmyg23 profile image
jimmyg23 in reply toleakeadea

you will be fine once you get your home assement the lady told it is just a matter of straight change over from dla to pip you will be fine

leakeadea profile image
leakeadea in reply tojimmyg23

Thank you, I truly hope so.

I still think it's unacceptable that this government has put so many genuinely unwell and disabled people thru a such stressful experience.

USA-UK profile image

I wish you well. I have a heart condition, emphysema, divectular disease, & fibromyalgia. DLA awarded indefinitely in 2003 with highest rate care & mobility. 2017 taking 39 weeks my change over to PIP I was reduced to standard rates on both. I lost my car within a month & have struggled since financially. I asked for a reconsideration & they stood firm. 2019 a new assessment will be done & this time when they want to come into my messy house I will let them. My doctors wrote letters of appeal but I did not take it to a tribunal because I could not cope as we had just found out my other half had cancer. Don't be like me - don't give in

leakeadea profile image
leakeadea in reply toUSA-UK

Oh my god your story makes me furious!!! 😤 I'm so sorry for what you have been put through, I hope you're wife has recovered?

You must appeal, have you seen the news, pip were taken to court because the wording they used in the application form was deemed as being "open to interpretation" which apparently is illegal. I guess they mean it was too vague, therefore the assessors could easily refuse pip to the applicants. Pip have not appealed against this decision and as such will now have to reassess tons of people who were refused pip.

I received a letter yesterday telling me that I have my PIP home assessment on Monday 25th Jun, so only four days notice. My sister will be with me thankfully but quite frankly I'm terrified.

If I don't get pip, or if they lower the rates then I don't know if I will be able to pay my rent, let alone pay for my carers and taxis to the GP etc.

I used a local charity to fill in my form for me and they called me yesterday to tell me that they will help me to appeal if I have to. They have helped so many people to appeal and told me that they have been successful in all but 1 appeal. Where do you live, perhaps they could help you too?

jimmyg12,

Sorry for any negative comments made on your post which has such positive news. I am genuinely so pleased that you're pip is all sorted now.

I just believe that the long term sick and disabled should never have been put in this position in the first place. We have enough to cope with on a daily basis, without being scared out of our minds that we will lose the financial support we have been relying on for so long.
