Do you prefer walking alone or with someone?
And what’s the reason?
It depends I quite like walking with someone because it can help distract me from my breathing and make walking easier cos I'm just chatting away to them and the more puppies I see on my walk the better
However I do like walking alone if heading to a specific destination e.g. I'm a college student who does placement in a dementia day centre I walk every Wednesday and I quite like being able to stick my headphones in and have space to day dream and have a lovely quiet walk to and from placement
So I like a bit of both but I think my favourite walk is walking to placement with headphones however I hate the hill I have to do every time I go to placement but once I pass the hill the walk is quite an easy nice walk
What about you? Do you like walking with or without people??
Hi
Walking on your own, means you get to go at your pace stop when you wish to.
Walking with others you may have a tendency to keep pace, which can compromise you breathing, further complicated if the other person panics which In turn makes you panic more.
Ideally would be a person who understands the condition and the limitations you have, and can be of assistance rather than a hindrance.
I don't have a walking buddy other than my two dogs. I take one and then rest about 30 minutes and then take the other. The wife used to go with me to the walking trail that the city built and I enjoyed that. Either way is ok with me.
A dog or two is a brilliant walking buddy
I can't have dogs because I'm allergic but seeing dogs while on a walk make the walk so much nicer too
I like walking alone, or with someone, or with my dog. Alone i can think better and go at my own pace, and turn back if i need to. I’m limited to what i can do with dog, border collies are energetic and need lots of play. I have a very dear friend i love walking with. Considerate of my copd and limitations and i feel very comfortable with them. Walking is one of best exercises along with swimming.
I prefer to walk with others as long as they are as slow or slower than me. I can't stand walking with those who march ahead leaving me behind though. x
I find I can’t walk and talk sometimes , I am on 2ltr o2 when moving . So it can be frustrating when others are talking and I am not 🙁
Walking with someone .....it helps if I panic when breathless.
Just someone there, even if I can't talk much .
As long as the other person walks at the same pace it is good to have company but I am also happy walking alone . What about you ?
I like walking ,jogging and cycling alone as I can concentrate on breathing and pace etc. Good to clear the mind and enjoy the outside.
I actually love walking round liverpool1 4 agood 3hrs with my son.we catch up as me time.he treats me 2 costa or theres cafe nero opposite waterstones in liverpool.we leave each other.theres a big debenhams but my fave shop is john lewis i love the designs and quality of goods

Im just glad i ccan still walk and not be breathless.if i was in the country i would quite like the solitude.
Hi, fellow Liverpool residence. Walking around Liverpool 1 is great in that it is flat and has much activity to look at when catching my breath.
Both. When I walk with my husband, we chat and the time goes a lot quicker. When I walk on my own I problem solve and pray.
Hi there , there are fors and against. I like company when out walking because I am prone to falls also. But company often walks faster than I can manage and does not stop for breath Alone I can get things done at my own pace, as my freind says "no rush" I have to rest and also can only do little amounts at a time especially if it involves any kind of lifting and carrying. Being breathless helps the lungs if done in small spates, hence the reason for exercises to expand the lungs. But many people with COPD also have other limiting illnesses.
Hello, I often prefer to walk alone when I have my walker. Reason being, I don’t have to talk which makes breathing more difficult. Also I like to take my time looking at gardens, listening to the birds singing their little tunes, and looking up at the sky, clouds making different shapes etc.
How about you? Take care. X
I walk alone but withy camera, it's a distraction and a hobby I love.
Good question!
I've been walking alone for about 2 years now. I love setting off with my ipod in my ears, a bus pass in my pocket(just in case), and a song on my lips (which should stay in my heart 'cause I'm a pretty bad singer). I start off facing any direction and then decide after a mile or two if I want to stop at Starbucks for a cup, Apple store for help , Jenni's for the best /strange ice cream in the world , or Lincoln Park Zoo (one of the only 2 free zoos left in the country) to be at peace with the more natural world. Last summer I had a great time attending every free or semi free street/art festival. Occasionally , I take a short walk with my 93 year old Dad---he does fairly well (he has endurance and stubbornness ) but my legs do hurt more when I have to walk very slow.
What I am having a problem with are the cars not stopping at stop signs or turning right on red WITH pedestrians legally in the crosswalk (I've been hit twice)---and oncoming pedestrians . I was politely taught to walk all the way to my right and be aware of others. Unfortunately, the majority of people have their focus on their phones ---I guess they really don't believe that they is any one else in the universe none the less right in front of them A few days ago was my fav---4 people walking all together and all with heads down and eyes glued to the almighty phone. None looked up and I was panicking as unlike Spider-Man I could not crawl up the concrete wall to my right. I was plowed into and thankfully didn't fall. I did manage to yell out an apology for daring to hinder the advancement of what was obviously a conjoined quartet.
Yes I'm getting to be THAT old lady
With a dog - they don't answer back but seem to be in touch with you
Always choose to walk alone but only with my iPod, it's the only time I get to listen to my music in peace! Family members offer to walk with me I think they get offended when I say no every time, but with my music I'm happier alone, I tend to forget about all my issues and I feel normal for a short time until I get back to reality again.
I used to love to walk alone but Ive got ptsd and struggle going out the house alone apart from to my neighbours or in the car.
