Stress incontinence & prolapse from coughing

Does anyone else suffer with stress incontinence & prolapse from coughing?

Been to see lovely physio today & have been given an electric device to help.

Although feel positive it's getting sorted & know it's going to take time (6wks initially, then poss another 6wks if no result then surgery referral) but just coming to terms with it really.

I have allergy asthma. Thanks for reading.

Very interested and will ask you to keep in touch as it's a problem a lot of us ladies have/may have to deal with. Wishing you have good results after the initial 6 weeks!

Great that your starting treatment 😊 I have cough incontinence at times and it's getting more frequent so I'm very interested to know how you get on. Good luck xx

Weird, I find that if I exert myself I have to have a pee no matter where I am. Very embarrassing in my local coop a few weeks ago. I also find that if I use Ventolin It makes me pee also. Any ideas??

Though I always managed to make it to a bathroom, I used to experience the same urge to pee after exertion. The respiratory nurse at my GP's said she'd never heard of that when I asked her about it. When I was hospitalised with pneumonia in 2016, I had some very scary, bouts of extreme SOB, and each episode was accompanied by complete loss of bladder control :( . A respiratory nurse at the hospital explained, it's a combination of panic/fear from not being able to breath and the brain prioritising that in a crisis, it's more important to focus on breathing than bladder control. I still find that if I experience any extreme SOB, I can't always control my bladder. Interesting that you mention Ventolin causing problems. I'd not heard of that, but have recently been nebulising it in an attempt to clear my chest and yesterday had my first 'accident' in weeks. I'd blamed it on the water-retention tablets and stopped taking them.

Interesting subject for sure lol. Thanks for that. I also had the same response from my nurse. I have now got used to what will happen, I know when to prepare myself. My wife is also and has got used to me pulling up on the side of the road. The police also were stumped when a young lively officer saw what was happening and put his blue lights and sirens on, raced all the was to the next roundabout, turned around and came back and parked behind us in the layby. Approaching me, saying 'you cannot do that there'. Telling him I would be there in a sec, which went on for about another 20 lol, I then explained to him it was a medical problem I have with my meds. Not happy with that, he then called up for more help. Bearing in mind that we were into about the 10th minute of the situation by now. for some reason, I needed to go again and duly started or wet my pants. He was asking me to stop, I couldn't, oh dear. By now the other police car had arrived, out stepped a much older officer who looked over to me, said, 'problems sir'? I looked at him and nodded. He said, enjoy the rest of your journey. I could hear him having a swift 'word' with his junior, who was looking at us with daggers. Anyways, off we all went. A look at the facts. Police see an older person parked safely in a layby on the other side of the dual road, no pavements or pedestrian access, needing relief, warranted high speed and blue lights AND sirens to get to me. The need to call another car for 'back-up', I'm 62 and 5 foot 6 inches, obviously not in the best of health. The list could go on. We couldn't stop laughing when we got going again, most excitement we had had in years. I wont get into the number of cars that sped past us well in excess of 70mph, the 5 cars who's drivers were using their phones. His x-ray vision missed them poor boy, but noticed us. Something that would only have taken less than a minute, turned into a police situation that lasted almost 30 + 2 pees. We still laugh at this story. It also highlighted the difference in temperance between older and younger members of our Police service. Where has common sense gone these days? Have a great weekend all.

I bet you hadn't bargained for all that excitement when you left the house!!

I really want to feel more in control of this though, it far more easier for men to stop their car & pee usually!! Also have been wearing a pad since Christmas due to bad infection then the everlasting pollen season which makes me cough so much.

I am practicing pelvic floor exercises as much as possible, I am probably doing them in my sleep!

Have a good week end!

Glad you were able to see the funny side of an embarrassing situation, made worse by the jobs-worth young police man. It took me a while to get over the embarrassment of having my first public accident on a very busy street in town. I'd just parked in the local Matalan on my way to see my GP when I was suddenly unable to breathe. There was a queue of traffic and I can remember two young lads in a car, shouting out to see if I was ok. Hope there isn't a video of it on social media somewhere (lol).

I find I cough so hard and frequent to get rid of rubbish off my chest from usually hay fever symptoms, I use the method of taking several deep breath and huffing to get the mucus/rubbish off my chest, which helps but there seems to be so much it makes me have accidents (blush)

I find what you said about the fear of not being able to breathe interesting and will try & focus on those deep belly breaths - my physio said imagine you are blowing up a balloon in your tummy when you breathe in!

Thank you for your reply.

Oh yes! I had a bladder op. 20 year’s ago which did clear it up but now I have a rectocele so slight double problems, particularly when I have a flare up and cough more. Getting those pelvic floor exercises right and doing them regularly seems to be the main cure though there might be an op. if things get really bad. At the moment I’m looking to trial these new miracle knickers at least for travelling. I think it’s something we should talk about more and health professionals should bring up as a matter of course. Good luck!

Thank you, my physio said it may come to an op as sometimes nothing works, but I want to be dry and will do the exercises as much as poss to try and avoid it!

Hope all goes well with your lucky knickers!

You say "have been given an electric device to help". Is that for the prolapse which I have had in the past. Do you know what it is called so we can look it up on Google please?

8405loi profile image
8405loi in reply tosarcoid1234

It's called NeuroTrac home stimulater, I think it's perhaps to help with the prolapse but for general in continence. I am 46yrs old & have had a prolapse & incontinence for a few years on & off, but it has got worse with my allergy asthma.
