Good morning from the forest walk - Lung Conditions C...
Good morning from the forest walk
Just got back from my walk to collect our bread from a small family run baker's. Surprising just how heavy 3 large loaves of wholemeal bread is, carrying it back for 2.5 miles. Today the trip was harder than usual and had to sit down for 5 mins when I got there, with really bad leg pain.
I am so sorry to hear about your stressful walk to collect bread, I have had two full knee replacements one this year, the other eight years ago. I couldn't walk very far before the second knee replacement for pain, now my knees are sorted my lungs are giving out instead lol, never mind I won't give up on that either, waiting for help in October to see specialist. If you haven't had your knees operated on it's worth finding out if you can, it changes everything. Good luck and good health for your future. Take care. X
It is peripheral vascular disease that causes the pain, I have very limited circulation below the waist. It is always my legs that stop me walking before my breathing does. So far it has only been on a flare-up that my breathing has stopped me, or if I go past 30/40 mins on the rowing machine.
I have never heard of your disease but it sounds terrible. I am so sorry that you have so much discomfort. I hope you have lots of support from family and friends. Please take care. X
To put it simply, it is the furring up of the blood vessels and yes caused by smoking too. I could have stents fitted but that comes with a future risk of amputations. I have chosen not to take that route, but through exercise it has very slowly improved with recovery time down to, usually, a minute from what was 15/20 mins last year, so I cannot really complain. I have it in the old ticker a little too and taking a nitrate pill once a day to open up the arteries there, so I can continue pushing the exercising safely.
Smoking tobacco really is evil, it can cause all sorts of damage, not just to the lungs.
I smoked 36 years ago, it was only a twenty packet per week and I probably gave most of them away, however it's still on my records. Some of my doctors have dismissed this as a smoker, but others still say I did. Wish I'd never tried now but when I was young you gave everything ago. My farther like myself smoked very little when he was young but he also worked down the pit. He got lung cancer twelve years ago and was given six month to live and died after six weeks, not in pain at all, I personally think it was more to do with the pits than anything else. I am thinking about your condition with concern and prey you get help and relief from any pain you are in.
Are your legs always cold as well? And do you experience swelling in your ankles or your legs? The reason I ask is because these are the things that I'm dealing with right now too. But I'm in a wheelchair so it makes sense that everything is going to swell. I just wish I could walk to the store for bread π
i am sorry that your are wheelchair bound, it must be awful loosing your independence to go where you want, when you want. Do not give up hope of ever walking again. Keep your legs and feet moving, even when sat down it is movement that helps pump the blood back to your heart and improving circulation thus avoiding the pooling of blood in your legs (the swelling). Put some music on and tap your feet to the beat, the more moving of the legs/feet the better.
With my legs it is debilitating after about a Kilometer, I have to deal with a lot of discomfort and extreme pain but power through it until I can no longer move with the muscles cramped up, feeling like I am walking on stilts. I find that sitting makes the pain even worse and remaining standing but leaning on my walking stick or against a wall is the best and quickest way to recover.
Yes I do have cold legs and feet and quite often my toenails have a blue tinge, thankfully no swelling. Exercise has reduced the recovery time, the pain has not eased in intensity but I only have to endure it for a much shorter time now. I can be really stubborn/determined, a trait that I am using to my advantage, I am not giving up.
I also live up 3 flights of stairs, if I loose the ability to climb them then I will be trapped indoors which I wish to delay as long as possible, which also gives me incentive to keep pushing on.
I thank you very much for replying. I am in the chair now for 5 years. I'm used to it but I try to excerise... I can't really walk but I stand and just do some slow exercises. I was diagnosed with MS in 1995 oh my goodness!! That long ago! I gave up driving two years ago but really miss it really miss that Independence. I can't imagine my toenails turning blue! Wow I experienced very bad muscle pain last night the first time ever. It's usually cramping if I experience anything. I took some magnesium. It is good for muscle or cramping (charlie horses). It relieved the pain quite fast. Do you ever take that? Good for the bones too. π good for you that you power through that I don't know if I have enough guts to do that. The more I read on this site the more I am convinced that we are such resilient human beings. No matter what comes our way we deal with it. And I think that's awesome. Keep the faith. And keep walking up those three flights of stairs. Hahaha
